Verbal abuse ( verbal assault or verbal assault ) is when someone strongly criticizes, insults, or criticizes others. Characterized by anger and underlying animosity, it is a destructive form of communication intended to undermine other people's self-concept and generate negative emotions. Verbal abuse is a maladaptive mechanism that can be exposed to anyone occasionally, such as during high stress or physical discomfort. For some, it is a pattern of behavior that is used intentionally to control or manipulate others or take revenge.

In schools and in everyday life, a person can engage in verbal-bullying (which often has a physical component) - to gain superior status against the targeted person and to bind with others against the target. Generally the oppressor does not know any other way to connect emotionally with others.

In romantic relationships, the verbal actor may respond to the "separation" of the spouse, that is, the independent mind, the outlook, the desire, the feeling, the expression (even happiness) that the offender sees as threats, irritants or attacks. Some people believe that offenders have low self-esteem and try to put their victims in the same position, that is, to believe negative things about themselves.

Because the abuser's need for dominance and unwillingness to accept their spouses as equal, verbal actors are forced to negate the perception of a partner, about abuse, which causes more psychological pain to the victim. This is also known as behavior like gaslighting or Jekyll and Hyde, because the offender keeps an unbalanced harassment target with hot and cold unbearable behavior. This confusion adds to the pain caused by psychological abuse and makes the victim unbalanced.

Anyone can experience verbal abuse. Usually, in romantic or family relationships, verbal violence increases the intensity and frequency over time. After exposure to verbal abuse, the victim may develop clinical depression or post-traumatic stress disorder. People who are targeted by verbal abuse from time to time may succumb to stress-related illnesses. Verbal abuse creates emotional pain and mental anguish in its target.

Despite the fact that verbal abuse does not leave a bruise, verbal abuse can harm a person's health as physical violence.
