Etimologi

The name Sentosa translates as "peace and tranquility" in Malay, which in turn comes from the Sanskrit term Santosha, meaning "satisfaction, satisfaction". Sentosa was formerly known as the Blanggal Dead Island which in the Malay language means "The Island of Death behind".

Name Blakang Mati is old; an island identified as Dead Blacan on map 1604 Singapore Manuel Godinho de ErÃÆ'Â © dia. Other early references to Blakang Mati Island include Burne Beard Island on the map Wilde 1780 MS, Niry Island , Nirifa from 1690 to 1700, and century references Nineteenth as Long Island (JH Moor). However, the initial map did not separate Blakang Mati from the nearby island of Brani Island, making it uncertain to which island the place name in the seventeenth century was called.

The island has been renamed several times. Until 1830, it was called the Long Island ("long island"). In the 1828 sketch of Singapore Island, this island is referred to as the Po. Long . According to Bennett (1834), the name Blanggal Mati was only given to the hill on the island by the Malay villagers on the island. The Malay name for the island is literally translated "dead back" or "behind the dead"; blakang means "behind" or "behind" or "after"; off means "dead". This is also called "dead island" or "dead island" or perhaps "island after death".

Different versions of how the island came to get such a vertebrate name:

  • One account associates an unpleasant name with murder and piracy in the island's past.
  • The second claimed that the island was a material paradise of the warrior spirits buried on Brani Island.
  • The third account claimed that the disease outbreak on the island in the late 1840s virtually obliterated Bugis indigenous people on the island. Dr. Robert Little, a British coroner who investigates death, discovered what is called Dead Fever Blakang, is said to be a fever caused by the miasmastic smoke arising from decaying leaves and marsh water on the island. This event caused controversy in the medical circles at that time for what causes were later recognized in 1898 as malaria spread by Anopheles mosquitoes. The government malaria research station was originally located here.
  • The fourth interpretation is that the "dead islands" are so called because of the lack of fertile soil in the hills. However, since the island creates a dead water area behind it without wind (hence "still behind" - still or ceases to be an alternative translation from dying) may be as simple as this - perhaps less romantic, but trustworthy from a nautical point of view.

In 1827, Captain Edward Lake of the Bengal Engineers Group in his report on public works and fortresses has proposed an alternative name for Blakang Mati as "St. George Island". However, the island was considered too unhealthy for residence and the proposed name never materialized.

In the 1972 contest organized by the Singapore Tourist Promotion Agency, the island was renamed Sentosa, a Malay word meaning "peace and tranquility", from Sanskrit, Santosha .

During the 1980s and 1990s, a number of paid-for-entry destinations were built on the island, which most locals consider unattractive. As a result, there is a joke that Sentosa's name means "Very Expensive and No More Also".

History

Initial period

In the nineteenth century, the island was considered important because it protected the way to Keppel Harbor. The plan to fortify the island as part of a defense plan for Singapore was drafted as early as 1827, but some of the fortress actually materialized until the 1880s, when the rapid growth of the harbor caused fears over the protection of coal stocks against enemy attacks. Fortress built on the island is Fort Siloso, Fort Serapong, Fort Connaught and Battery Mount Imbiah.

The west end of the Belakang Mati, where Fort Siloso is now, was called the ridge of the tiger (tiger's nest). Juvenile is a type of herb that is used as a drug in labor, but there is no explanation of how the fort is called, sea people Kopit Village only knows the place under the name /i>. In the 1930s, the island was fortified strongly and was an important component of the Singapore Fort, and the Royal Artillery base.

Second World War

During the Second World War, the island was a British military fortress. The British established a large-scale caliber fortifications at various points along the island parallel to the south, facing the sea in the hope of a Japanese attack toward the sea. The myth that guns are not able to point to the north developed after the War but this is wrong, they can spin to the northern point but they are only equipped with armor-retaining shells for voyages that make the shells ineffective against ground troops. Japan invaded and seized Singapore from the north, after doing the same to Malaya (now known as West or Peninsular Malaysia).

After the surrender of the Allied Forces on 15 February 1942, Fort Siloso became a prisoner of war camps, accommodating Australian and British prisoners from Japan. During the Japanese Occupation, under Operation Sook Ching, suspected, often arbitrary, Chinese people engaged in anti-Japanese activities were brutally murdered. 300 bodies, sprayed with bullets, stranded on the shore of the Dead Rear Island, and buried by British prisoners.

1945-72

After the Japanese surrender in 1945 and the return of Singapore to British rule, the island became the basis of the first Singapore First Regiment of the Royal Artillery (SRRA 1) in 1947. Other registered local people from Singapore were sent to the island for military training base before being shipped to another unit of the British Army in Singapore. Ten years later, the first SRRA was disbanded and their weapons dismantled. The beach artillery was replaced with the Gurkhas infantry unit, the first being the Duke of Edinburgh's own Gurkha Rifles and 2/10 Gurkha Rifles' own Princess. Fort Siloso and Imbiah Mountain became religious retreats and Protestant church houses. Fort Connaught was left in ruins. Serapong fort became a secure communication and hearing station.

In the early 1960s, during the Indonesian Confrontation, 2/10 began the island. Although Indonesia is within close proximity, there are several amateur attempts of direct action by Indonesians towards Singapore. The Gurkha Battalion rotates six months each month to Kalimantan where most of the military action during the Confrontation takes place. An important march took place on the island during a confrontation to announce the award of Victoria Cross to Rambahadur Limbu for an action in Borneo. With the end of the confrontation in 1966 and the withdrawal of the Gurkha battalion from the island, the British handed Sentosa to the Singapore Armed Forces of the newly independent Singapore Government in 1967. In 1967, Blakang Mati Island became the base for the Singapore Naval Volunteer Force, which was moved there from the old base at Telok Ayer Basin. The Maritime Training School was also established there, like the first Navy Medical Center. It became part of the Republic of Singapore Navy.

In the 1970s, the government decided to develop the island into a holiday resort for local visitors and tourists. The few facts discussed are that many generations of Malay and Chinese who live harmoniously on the island are moved to high-rise apartments in Singapore, the beautiful island life is lost and not by choice.

1972

The island was renamed "Sentosa" in 1972, which means peace and tranquility in Malay (from Sanskrit, ), from a suggestion by the public. The Sentosa Development Corporation was formed and established on September 1, 1972 to oversee the development of the island. Since then, about S $ 420 million of private capital and other S $ 500 million government funds have been invested to develop the island.

In 1974, the Singapore Cable Car system was built, connecting Sentosa to Mount Faber. Finally, in 1975, the Republic of Singapore Navy had moved from Sentosa to the island of Brani Island. A series of attractions are then opened to visitors including Fort Siloso, Surrender Chamber's wax museum, Musical Fountain, and Underwater World. The causeway bridge opened in 1992 connecting Sentosa to the mainland.

The Sentosa Monorail system opened in 1982 to transport visitors at seven stations located around the western side of the island.

1989

Former political prisoner and Nobel laureate Chia Thye Poh spent three and a half years in internal exile in Sentosa after he was released from 23 years in prison in 1989.

2005

On March 16, 2005, the monorail service was discontinued to allow for the new Sentosa Express, which commenced operations on January 15, 2007. The environmental assessment undertaken by the Singapore government concluded that the integrated resort development at Sentosa would result in the greatest possible loss of high-scale biodiversity, habitat, soil erosion and climate change, as well as several other destructive ecological impacts. Therefore, more than two hundred trees and plants from the area to be cleared for resort development are replanted elsewhere on the island to minimize negative impacts on the environment.

In 2009, the construction of a new foot bridge began. Sentosa Boardwalk worth S $ 70 million including theme parks, shops and restaurants. There are sidewalks and travellators covered along the sidewalk for rainy days. The Boardwalk, officially opened by Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean on January 29, 2011, provides visitors with an alternative mode of travel to reach the island. The Sentosa Boardwalk, designed by Aedas, is named Best Leisure Architecture in Asia Pacific and 5 * The Best Leisure Architecture in Singapore, at the Asia Pacific Property Awards this year.

2018

The island hosts North Korea-United States 2018 summit between US President Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un North Korea on June 12, 2018, at Capella Hotel. Sentosa Island was steamed as a 'special event area' by the Singapore Government and Hotel Capella was chosen as the venue by the White House, a week before the Summit.

Geography

The island has an area of nearly 5 km 2 (1.9Ã, sqÃ, mi). It lies just half a kilometer (a quarter mile) away from the southern coast of Singapore's main island. It is the fourth largest island in Singapore (not including the main island). 70% of the island is covered by secondary rain forests, monitor monitor lizards, monkeys, peacocks, parrots and other native flora and fauna; also, when the development of Resorts World Sentosa begins, the environmental impact is kept to a minimum when more than two hundred trees in the determined to be replanted elsewhere on the island.

Further developments have significantly impacted the island's biodiversity that many fauna and flora have been lost. The island also has a stretch of white sand beaches covering 2.2 km (1.2 million), this impact on coral reefs. Much of the land is currently being added to Sentosa due to land reclamation.

    Sustainability

Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC) has developed a sustainability plan to safeguard the environment and to preserve Sentosa's heritage assets. In fact, many parts of Sentosa still maintain their original, calm and fertile environment - driven by the Company's land use policy to maintain 60% of the island as open and green (natural area reduced to about 25% by 2014).

Efforts are being made to raise awareness among island visitors and staff on environmental and sustainable tourism issues. This is done through regular campaigns and educational talks.

Key achievements related to sustainability include:

    • Sentosa was selected as a Sustainable Tourism Destination finalist in the "Tourism for Tomorrow" World Travel and Tourism Council Award in 2013.
    • The island is home to about 30 heritage trees (listed in the Treasury Tree List of National Parks) and more than 20 conserved colonial buildings, some of which date back to the 1800s.
    • A fully restored military fort in Singapore, Fort Siloso.
    • Some Green Mark certified buildings like Sentosa Cove Village, Sentosa Family Entertainment Center, W Hotels and Resorts World Sentosa. Green Marks are awarded by the Singapore Building and Construction Authority for buildings that meet specific environmental-friendly criteria.
    • The award-winning Eco-hotel, Siloso Beach Resort.
    • Develop the Sentosa Boardwalk, which is a covered pedestrian walkway with various sustainability features, to connect the island with mainland Singapore. Guests are encouraged to use the Boardwalk to enter and exit Sentosa as it leaves a minimal carbon footprint.
    • Partner with Nanyang Technological University (NTU) to test Singapore's first low-flow low-tide turbine at Sentosa Boardwalk.
    • Community-sponsored initiatives such as the annual "Sentosa Gives" initiative in September, which saw more than 1,500 children, teenagers and seniors from participating voluntary welfare organizations, schools and charities benefiting from the many activities planned for them. The corporation also offers island-go-to-charity concessions throughout the year.
