Covert accidents , also known as emotional incest , is a type of abuse in which parents seek their child for emotional support that other adults usually provide. The effects of a secret incest on children as they mature are thought to mimic actual incest, albeit to a lesser extent. This term describes the interaction between parents and children who do not include sexual harassment. This term has been criticized for expanding the definition of incest into excessive levels, inflating the prevalence of child abuse, and overuse and unfounded.

Covert Subconsciousness was defined in the 1980s as an emotionally abusive relationship between parental and childlike figures that did not involve any relationship of love or sexual intercourse, although it involves similar interpersonal dynamics as the relationship between sexual partners. Defining a relationship like "incest" has led to criticism of the concept to dramatically loosen the definition of incest, making child abuse seem more general than it really is.
Incant incant is described as happening when parents are unable or unwilling to maintain relationships with other adults and forcing the couples' emotional role into their child instead. Children's needs are ignored and conversely there is only to meet the needs of parents and adults may not be aware of the problems created by their actions.
The effects of a secret incest are thought to mimic incest though to a lesser extent, and Kenneth Adams, who derives the concept, portrays the victim as having anger or guilt towards the elderly and problems with self-esteem, addiction and sexual and emotional intimacy. Psychotherapist Roni Weisberg-Ross has noted that the term may not be very useful, as it may lead to linking almost any possible relationship or dysfunctional problem, to a "deterrent, simplified diagnosis." Ross also criticized the term for its emphasis on children who meet unmet parent needs, noting that children often meet emotional or other needs from parents, with often unclear boundaries and no definitions when this leads to permanent damage or danger.
Jung's analyst and writer Marion Woodman describes a secret incest as a "boundless bond" in which parents or parents use children as a mirror to support their needs, rather than reflect the child in favor of the child's emotional development.
Alcoholism and other substance addictions are also associated with the occurrence of secret incest.
