Travel Bug is a registered trademark of Groundspeak, Inc. which is used to describe dog tags used in Geocaching. This is moved from cache to cache, with a unique tracking number that allows its movement to be tracked online (www.geocaching.com). Some tags are tied to an object, known as a hitchhiker, before being released to the cache. Travel bugs have also been used as advertisements to promote Jeep or increase diabetes awareness. Free service known as Geokrety is also available.

Description

Trip bug is a trackable item that looks similar to a dog tag. Tags stamped with tracking number and website address Geocaching.com. Travel bugs can be attached to other items by using chains on travel bugs if required, examples of such items include teddy bears, toy cars, or golf balls. These attached items are called "hitchhikers". During the bug registration on the website, the owner can create a name set and also create a destination or mission for the bug. This mission can be as simple as "traveling as far as possible" or traveling to a specific cache, location, or type of location. At Geocaching.com, each travel bug has an individual page that tracks its movement and calculates the distance traveled.

Travel bugs move from cache to cache by Geocachers take bugs and move them physically. There is no obligation to take bugs from the cache because Geocachers can only "find" bugs on the website. This is where cacher finds the travel bugs and logs it as remaining in the existing cache and does not move it. Travel bugs have been promoted for use in education, and also in Scouting.

They can also be used in bug racing trips, where a group of geocachers will issue bugs on the same day in order to travel the longest distance or to score points by reaching a specific destination.

Similar to travel bugs, geocoin is a coin that is printed with a tracking number, to allow its movement to be recorded online. Unlike geocoins, most of which have separate icons to reflect different styles and series of coins, travel bugs are usually represented by common travel bug icons (although the attached item may vary, the dog bug travel tags are all almost identical in appearance). Different travel bug icons are available if someone has a travel bug tattoo with a trackable number.

The free tracking service, known as Geokrety, which has support for geocaching sites like Opencaching.us, and partial support for other geocaching sites, is also available.

Promotional Travel Bug

Every year from 2004 to 2007, Jeep has sponsored the contest, Jeep 4ÃÆ' â € "4 Geocaching Challenge, featuring a series of different jeeps different bugs. Travel bugs are released throughout the United States without a specific mission in mind, but every searcher is inserted into the picture for the new Jeep and other prizes. There is a separate contest for photo entry for each series of jeeps traveling bugs. In 2004, five thousand yellow Jeep Wrangler journey bugs were released, followed by five thousand white Jeep Wrangler Rubicon travel bugs in 2005, six thousand Jeep Rescue green insect travel concepts in 2006, and eight thousand red Jeep Commander journey bugs in 2007.An ad campaign promotes travel bugs with ads in magazines like Women's Health . Every year, Jeep travel bugs have followed different naming conventions. The first series of yellow Jeep are only numbered, and the white Jeep of 2005 is named first. 2006 Jeeps are named after different peaks in the United States, and 2007 Jeeps are named after different rivers in the United States.

In late 2006, to promote diabetes awareness and to garner support for the United Nations resolution, the International Diabetes Federation disseminated the "United for Diabetes" travel bug to be released by volunteers around the world. Unlike the Jeep travel bugs, every Unite for Diabetes travel bug has a special mission. Each individual bug is assigned to one of the 20,000 target cities around the world (eg, Guben, Germany). The bug mission is to travel to, then around, the target city, collect geocaching logs and photos along the way. Like the Jeep series, the Unite for Diabetes series is tied to a contest. Specially-made geocoins were also made for release in 2007.
