James "Jim" Duncan Halpert (born October 1, 1978) is a fictional character in the US version of The Office television sitcom, described by John Krasinski. This character is based on Team Canterbury of the original version of The Office . The character is also named after childhood childhood producer executive Greg Daniels. He was introduced as a sales representative at the Scranton branch of the paper distribution company Dunder Mifflin, before moving to the Stamford branch in the third season. After joining Scranton and Stamford branches, he became Assistant Regional Manager, and later became co-manager with Michael Scott during the sixth season episode of "The Promotion" to "The Manager and the Salesman". After Dunder Mifflin was purchased by Saber Corporation, Jim was the only very brief regional manager of the branch office, before returning to the Sales department until his termination was requested in the final series.
His character served as Michael's intelligent, light-hearted, straight-hearted man, though this was also defined by the carelessness of fellow competitor Dwight Schrute and romantic interest at receptionist Pam Beesly, whom he began dating in the fourth season, marrying sixth, and having children children in the sixth and eighth.

Biography
Jim Halpert was born on October 1, 1978, to Gerald and Betsy Halpert. She has two brothers, Pete and Tom, who share her love of jokes but have emerged as unpleasant and somewhat bullying towards their little sister. Jim's parents may live in Scranton too, as his sister Larissa and her best friend Alan Murphy are listed as her emergency contacts at Dunder Mifflin. While Pete and Tom have been seen on the show several times, Larissa has not. He has a nephew, Vanessa, and a nephew old enough to play T-ball. In the "Branch of War", while he is not specific to which brother he means, he states that his brother's wife has just had another baby. Jim enjoys cycling, and, as he reveals in the deleted scene of "Take Your Daughter to Work Day", at the time, will take care of the daughter of Toby Flenderson, Sasha. He also listed soft-shell crabs as his favorite food. Jim has noted that basketball is "What kind of thing [is]" in high school. Although there are no high schools specifically named by Jim, both are Dunmore High School (as evidenced in a scene removed from "Product Recall" where, during a business visit, he asks a high school student about a former teacher) and West Scranton High School proven when, during "Email Surveillance", Pam holds her yearbook displaying their mascot name, Invaders, on the front) referenced in separate episodes. In the Episode "Dwight's Speech", Jim told Dwight that he majored in Public Speaking, however, he later denied this. Jim began working on Dunder Mifflin between 1998 and 1999 (as evidenced in the "Pilot", and "The Merger", where Jim said that he still loves when Michael says, "Wazzup!" Ferociously after seven years, and that on the day his first at work Michael played the orientation video parodying The Blair Witch Project).
In some episodes, it is mentioned that Jim is a fan of Philadelphia Phillies, Philadelphia Eagles, and Philadelphia 76ers. Jim appears to be a hip-hop fan, especially Eminem as Pam mentions he listened to the 8 Mile Soundtrack on his iPod in "The Delivery". Apparently, he was of Scottish descent, as in "Niagara", his father could be seen wearing a skirt for his son's wedding with Pam. In the episode "Weight Loss", it was revealed that the screen name for AIM is JIM9334.
Although Jim likes to play pranks on Dwight, he is shown to have some similarities with his arch-rivals, such as comic book knowledge and appreciation for the science fiction/fantasy genre; as shown in "Take Your Daughter To Work Day" when Jim and Dwight correct Michael on details about Superman and Aquaman. Despite frequent conflicts, Jim and Dwight also proved to be very competent sales teams in "Traveling Salesman".
She and Pam share the 2010 Subaru Outback. Before getting engaged to Pam, Jim had previously drove Saab 9-3, 2006 Saab 9-2x and 2005 Toyota Corolla.

Character history
Season 1-3
Jim Halpert was first introduced in "Pilot". He insisted the whole series about his job as a salesman at Dunder Mifflin Paper being a temporary one, saying, "Now, this is just a job If I go higher, this will be my career, and if this is my career I have to throw myself in front of the train. "This view is most evident in the elaborate jokes he plays on his colleagues, especially Dwight, as well as his sarcastic remarks and facial expressions to the film crew and his provocative comments during the frequent ridiculous employee gatherings. However, he succeeded professionally and consistently became one of the best salesmen. This may be because, as Pam mentioned later, "everyone likes Jim".
Most of Jim Halpert's character is his relationship with Pam Beesly, who is often the subject of office speculation. This is exacerbated by the fact that Pam is engaged to Roy Anderson, a warehouse worker of Dunder Mifflin. During the first two seasons, incidents like Pam fell asleep on Jim's shoulders on "Diversity Day" and drunk kissing him in "The Dundies" suggesting possible mutual feelings; However, Pam never acted on them and she was still engaged to Roy. On one occasion, at "The Fight," she teased him walking too far, when Meredith looked at him to play with him, causing him to shut it immediately, startling him with disgust, though he finally forgave him. He gets very angry when he hears Pam discussing the details of a marriage he calls a travel agent and scheduling a trip to Australia, deliberately making himself unable to attend the wedding. Bored with his work, tortured by his situation with Pam, and guilty of a stack of complaints filed by Dwight against him, Jim investigated the transfer to the Dunder Mifflin branch in Stamford, Connecticut. In the final of season 2, "Casino of the Night", she confessed her love for Pam at the office. Pam, whose marriage to Roy was planned out and only a few weeks away, clearly showed her grief but gently lowered it. Jim weeping away, then kissing him in the office, and the season ends. In the third season premiere of "Gay Witch Hunt", it was revealed that he made a transfer to Stamford despite the fact that Pam had canceled his marriage and he obviously still had a strong feeling for him. The reason was then stated as "It's just that I put everything on the phone twice, and he says no, twice." in "The Convention".
Although in subsequent seasons, after Ryan Howard's promotion, the relationship between him and Jim seems tense, in the early seasons the two seem friendly. In the "Casino Night", they are shown talking, laughing and drinking together.
Throughout season 2, Jim is dating Katy, who originally appeared in season 1 as "Girl Bag" in "Hot Girl". After Jim and Katy parted ways in "Booze Cruise", he left a message asking a fellow Dunder Mifflin employee named Brenda, who made Kelly incredulity. Jim's misfortune was assumed because he could not forget Pam. However, things began to search for Jim as he made friends with seller Karen Filippelli in Stamford, and when the company's board of directors decided to close Scranton's branch, Jim was named Assistant Regional Manager of the newly created "Dunder Mifflin Northeast". But the company's plans changed when Stamford's regional manager Josh Porter accepted the job at Staples. The Stamford branch then closes, with some employees being offered a transfer to Scranton. The offer for Jim to be a Regional Manager's Assistant stands, though now in Scranton. Jim initially did not want to go back to Scranton because Pam but finally decided to do it. Karen, who increasingly likes Jim and wants to connect with her, also transfers to Scranton.
In "The Merger", Jim and Pam's reunion is awkward. Pam was excited, but Jim was obviously uncomfortable. She let Pam know that she saw someone, and gradually Karen was introduced as her boyfriend. When Jim settled back in Scranton, he used promotions as an excuse to avoid long interactions and pranks with Pam, claiming that pulling pranks is not appropriate for his position. However, in time, Jim returns to his old ways, mainly targeting Andy Bernard, Stamford's transfer, and Dwight.
By the middle of the season, it became clear that Jim's unresolved feelings for Pam influenced his relationship with Karen. In "The Return", Jim decides to make fun of Andy; However, Karen is unable and Ryan does not want to help her, so she turns to Pam, who is ready to agree. Their interactions during the joke caused Karen to feel threatened. He faces Jim, and finally admits he still has feelings for Pam. Despite this fact, their relationship continues.
In "Cocktails", Roy destroys the bar when Pam tells him that he kisses Jim during "Casino Night". Roy then tries to attack Jim at work at "The Negotiation", but Dwight spray Roy with pepper spray. Roy gets fired, but when Pam convinces Jim that it's over between him and Roy for good, Jim does not trust him and tells it to him.
In the "Beach Games", when a company came out on the beach, Pam confessed to Jim in front of everyone that he was the reason he decided to marry him. He also stated that he has lost their friendship since he left Scranton for Stamford. That night, Jim tells Pam that he feels as though he has never actually returned from Stamford, secretly admitting that he has been actively fighting his feelings for her throughout the year. However, Jim's relationship with Karen and a pending interview for a company position that would require relocation to New York City, still hinders a potential romance.
In "The Job", Jim, Karen, and Michael each interview for the company's position. During the interview, he noticed the care note from Pam in her briefcase. After the interview he returned to Scranton, leaving Karen without a lift. Back at Scranton's office, Pam describes her lack of satisfaction with the current state of her relationship with Jim. Jim then suddenly interrupts the session to ask him for dinner, which makes him very surprised. He gets confused and excited, and accepts the invitation. Jim replied, "Well then... this is a date," and left abruptly. Pam returns to the camera, smiles, just asks, "What's the question?" In the webisode titled "Summer Vacation Office", found on the NBC website, Karen states that Jim "threw my ass" and left her crying in the fountain.
Seasons 4-6
In the inaugural season, "Fun Run", Pam and Jim revealed to the camera crew that they had been dating for several months and were very happy. In the episode "Model Chair", Jim reveals his plan to propose to Pam, showing the camera crew diamond ring, explaining that "[he] got it a week after [they] started dating".
In "Local Ads", Jim develops his own avatar for the game Dwight Second Life . Pam notes that her online alter-ego plays guitar and is a Philadelphia sports writer, implicitly revealing Jim's lesser-known aspirations, and a callback to "Email Supervision" from Season 2, where she has a guitar in her bedroom.
In the episodes "Survivor Man" and "Night Out", Jim takes on his role as manager while Michael is out of the office. But the second time, his efforts made the office better. Ryan, annoyed by Jim's popularity with his boss David Wallace, gave Jim a performance warning on "Did I Stutter?", Quoting "playing with Dwight" and "spending time at the reception" as a matter of productivity, despite high sales figures.
Though early in the Jim drive series Toyota Corolla, he, during this time, drives the Saab final model, including Saab 9-2x and the top line Saab 9-3 Aero then Subaru Outback. He mentions in "Niagara" that he has been able to ride a standard transmission since high school.
In "Goodbye, Toby", Jim shows his happiness and support for Pam entering the Pratt Institute, where he will be for the next three months. He plans to propose at the party go Toby, until Andy proposes in front of everyone to Angela, who accepts. Jim put the ring in his pocket and put off the engagement. Instead, he proposed during the 5 season premiere, "Weight Loss", during a late-afternoon lunch when it rained on an Interstate stop between Scranton and New York City, where Pam attended Pratt.
Jim and Pam stay in touch during their time at art school via webcam, instant messaging, and frequent phone calls. Jim eagerly awaits Pam's return in "Business Travel". She is sad but supportive when Pam calls, says she has failed in class and has not been able to go home. That afternoon she finds Pam waiting in the parking lot, claiming that she hates art school. He bought his parents home and started taking his career more seriously than in previous episodes. When the new Vice President Charles Miner (Idris Elba) arrived at the office to watch over Michael, he and Jim immediately clashed when Charles lowered, and denounced Jim as an underachiever and a clever man with a "ready position." Charles booed when Jim was invited to sit in a meeting with David Wallace about Michael Scott Paper Company. However, Jim came as an intelligent and professional person, and persuaded Michael to be bought. In the process, he finally stands up for Charles after Charles kisses up to their boss, prompting Jim to make a cynical statement on his face. After realizing Dwight's incompetence during the meeting, Charles encourages Jim to talk to Michael. As a newly hired receptionist, Pam was rehired in sales with Jim.
During "Company Picnic", Pam injured her ankle during a volleyball match and Jim took her to the hospital. The camera crew were placed outside the exam room while doctors renewed Jim and Pam on his condition. There was no audio when the camera showed Jim and Pam suddenly hugged, looking surprised and excited, before Jim appeared to call Dwight and tell him that they were not going back to the game. It's very implied that Pam is pregnant, and pregnancy is confirmed at the premiere of Season 6, "Gossip".
Jim was promoted to Regional Co-Manager, along with Michael, in "The Meeting." His promotion caused trouble at the office because the staff did not take it seriously and he was often in a power struggle with Michael. When Dunder Mifflin filed for bankruptcy and was taken over by Saber, the printer selling company, Jim chose to be a salesman again (mainly because Saber's unopened commission meant massive pay increases).
Jim and Pam were married in a highly anticipated episode, for an hour, "Niagara". When the madness of their guests threatens to ruin the wedding day, they run away and marry in private on "Maid of the Mist" before returning to take part in the planned church wedding. Their daughter, Cecelia Marie Halpert (named after Jenna Fischer's nephew who was born on the day they shot "The Delivery") was born in an episode an hour away a few months later, in "The Delivery".
Season 7
In season 7, some of Jim's vulnerabilities are displayed. Jim displayed a mild jealousy when he met Danny Cordray, a superior paper vendor who went out with Pam when he was in Stamford. In the "Costume Contest", after hearing that Danny never called Pam back because he was too "tacky" for him, Jim was inspired to put on a Popeye costume for him (dressed as Olive Oyl), which he was initially reluctant to perform, marking his first time seen wearing the real costume. In "Classy Christmas", Jim became the victim of various snow-themed jokes designed by Dwight. Jim was humiliated by being forced to feed Dwight pizza and beer in the "Viewing Party" to get him to get Cece to sleep at night.
His sales skills remained strong, when at "WUPHF.com" it was revealed that he had closed his sales limit for the year and could not make any more commissions, leading him to look for a silly break in the office until Gabe Lewis admonished him to stop harassing everyone. Because Gabe was not sympathetic to Jim's situation, Jim then made a joke that ended with Gabe being forced to listen to Jo Bennett's tedious autobiography. In "The Seminar" it was revealed that he has had the highest sales of all Scranton branches for at least three months running.
In "Todd Packer", when Todd comes to Dunder Mifflin looking for a job in the office and is hired, Dwight and Jim do a shared scheme to get him to leave the office.
In "Goodbye, Michael," Jim is the only one who knows that Michael will leave earlier than he said and chose to remain silent to let Michael go, but he tells Pam that he can meet him at the airport before he leaves. He also emotionally told Michael he was the best boss he ever had, and they parted goodbye.
In "Training Day", Jim and Pam try to make a good first impression on their new boss Deangelo Vickers. They believe they have started well by showing photos of their baby, but Deangelo immediately bothered them. In the "Inner Circle", Jim proved to be one of Deangelo's favorites among the staff. He is temporarily barred from Deangelo's inner circle when he speaks for the women after they reject Deanelo's sexist attitude. Jim then summoned Deangelo out after the boss boasted about the jump-jumping Michael Jordan he could do, which caused a traumatic brain injury and left Deangelo in a coma.
In "Dwight K. Schrute, (Acting) Manager", Jo Bennett offers Jim the temporary manager position after Deangelo disappears, which Jim rejects. Jo then calls Jim "the only person who refuses me".
In the "Search Committee", Jim is one of three people who are looking for Michael's successor (and Deangelo). Creed is a temporary regional manager, so this speeds up the process (because Creed is incompetent).
Season 8-9
At the start of season 8, it was revealed that Jim would become a father for the second time because Pam was expecting a son (where Pam jokingly called him "Little Michael Scott"). Pam and Jim were blessed with sending outside Philip Halpert's camera around the midseason sign, and Jim took Philip to the office to try and fix relationships with angry colleagues (he lied about spending a full week on jury duty, after being completely dismissed on the first morning , and ended up spending weeks helping Pam overwhelmed taking care of their two young children). Jim also had to deal with a crush on co-worker Cathy Simms, who failed to try to seduce him when they became part of the Saber Store team in Tallahassee.
In the "New People", Jim revealed that he was offered to help his friend start a sports marketing company in Philadelphia called Athlead. At first he refused, but later revealed that he accepted the offer. Pam did not find out until "Andy's Ancestor", and despite her support, she then worried about Jim not telling him sooner and about how much money he had put into it. Jim gets permission from David Wallace to take a second job, and in "Target" he convinces Stanley and Phyllis to agree on covering his duties on the days when he left.
In the "Warehouse Lawsuit", Jim offers Darryl a chance to join him in a new job and even though Darryl has a disaster interview, he gets a position thanks to Jim's recommendation. Later, Jim and Darryl became roommates even in Darryl's "Vandalism" annoyed at Jim's messy and careless life.
Jim's weekly trip to Philadelphia caused an increasing tension in his marriage to "Customer Loyalty", it came to a head when he missed the dance performance of Cece and then angrily blamed Pam for not recording it. Painfully, Pam broke up and confessed at Brian, the boom mic operator from the documentary film crew.
In "Moving On", Pam interviews for a job in Philadelphia, but then reveals to Jim that he does not really want to move there after all.
In "Finale", Darryl revealed that Jim's sports marketing company is now in Austin, Texas and has been renamed Athleap. Pam sells the couple's home, unbeknownst to Jim, to show his support to Jim and allow the family to move to Austin so Jim can continue with Athleap.
Appearance
Jim has appeared in every episode of The Office with the exception of "Mafia", where only his voice is heard. The show clip episode "The Banker" featured Jim in a flashback of previous episodes, and Jim just appeared in the new recording for a moment, and without line. In addition, in the episode of the seven seasons of "Ultimatum", Jim only appears in the cool outdoors, and there is no explanation for the rest of the episode. The cold opening was actually filmed in the previous season and recycled for the episode because John Krasinski was on the set of filming.
Reception
In the media, Jim is sometimes called Everyguy. In his article "Get Out of the First Job Trap" for US. News and World Report , Liz Wolgemuth uses Jim's character as a template for an essay on a less motivated young graduate. In an article about the profile of a stereotyped office worker, Jim is identified as a worker who "drifted into work, [temporarily] you postponed asking yourself difficult questions about career plans."
