History
The Illinois Institute of Art - Chicago was founded in 1916 as the School of Commercial Art, which is one of the first applied art and design colleges in the United States. Three years later, William F. Ray became president and entered the school under the name of Ray School.
During the 1920s, and 1930s, schools increased substantially in enrollment as professional art, design photography, and fashion programs added to the curriculum. In the 1930s, the name "Vogue School" was used during an advertising campaign for fashion courses offered by schools, so the school became widely known as Ray-Vogue School . When Ruth Wade Ray occupied the presidency in 1945, Ray-Vogue has been recognized throughout the country as a leader in professional art and fashion education. The college was renamed "Ray College of Design" in 1981 and was given the authority to grant associate degrees in all its programs.
In 1985, the college president, Wade Ray, opened a branch campus near Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, which later became The Illinois Institute of Art - Schaumburg. One year later, college was awarded the authority to award a Bachelor of Arts degree by the Illinois Higher Education Council. Ray College of Design joined the The Art Institutes system in 1995 as The Illinois Institute of Art.
As part of The Art Institutes, the Illinois Institute of Art - Chicago refocused its undergraduate and mission programs to serve four basic creative industries (fashion, interior design, culinary and media arts, including digital film making, game art design, graphic design, and advertising) as a skills-oriented and market-driven college.
Since 1995, the Illinois Institute of Art - Chicago has evolved with programs and floor space for the growth of its students. The Illinois Institute of Art-Chicago takes advantage of the expansion and renovation of West Mart Center's first floor (350 N. Orleans) from the Mart Center of Merchandise and the Clothes Center complex. Almost all new floor space is shared and occupied by the Illinois Institute of Art and by Argosy University.
In 2007, a new classroom opened on the newly acquired five floors on the Loop campus. At the end of the school year 2007, universities successfully expanded floor space on the campus of Mart Center and Loop campus, and stopped the use of temporary space.
At the end of 2007, The Art Institute of Michigan serving the Detroit metropolitan area became a branch location of the Illinois Institute of Art - Chicago. Also, developments were made to formally enter the location of The Art Institute in Schaumburg and Cincinnati as a branch location under the umbrella of The Illinois Institute of Art - Chicago.
Illinois Institute of Art - Chicago won regional accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission for the Association of North Centers and Schools for ten years in 2008. The interior design program was re-certified by the Interior Design Accreditation Board several months earlier. Also, in June, 2008, Argosy University moved from space at Campus Mart Center allowing the Illinois Institute of Art Chicago to develop its program that caters to the fashion and interior design industries further there.
Each year, the journal DesignIntelligence conducts research and publishes "America's Best Architecture & Design School," a ranking of accredited programs throughout the United States to determine the best colleges and universities for architecture and design. Illinois Institute of Art-Chicago was selected as one of the top 15 undergraduate interior design programs in the United States in 2008. In 2009, the program improved its ranking to No. 1. 9.
