Biografi

Little Bimbo

Smith was born in Manchester, Jamaica. His music career began at the age of twelve, when he performed under the name Little Bimbo. During the 1980s he worked as a broadcaster on sound systems such as Conquering the Lions, Life Warnings, Pepper's Disco, Stereophonic , and Destiny Outernational (where he first met Tony Rebel). He recorded his first song in 1985, but it will be two years later before his first single, "Problem Everywhere" was released. The material album of this period ( Journey ) was then released. In 1988, he joined Sugar Minott's Youth Promotion label, released "No Disrespect", and worked regularly with Tony Rebel, now billed as 'Bimbo' only. The couple began to appear as a duo around the sound system for much praise. The Garnett Silk Meet The Lion Conqueror: A Album Dub Selection Set from around this time and features an exclusive DJ cut clutch recording for the sound system from the mid-1980s to the end of the decade.. Rebel, a Rastarfari, eventually turned Smith into his religion with the help of a poet named Yasus Afari, a close friend of both DJs.

Singing career

In 1989, at the suggestion of veteran singer Derrick Morgan, Smith changed from singing to singing, to recording sessions at Bunny Lee's studio with Rebel, including a song recorded separately, as a duo, and with Anthony Selassie, and he began working under the name original. Heartbeat label Tony Rebel Meets Garnett Silk at Dancehall Conference compiles this early Morgan-supervised recording. The success of this session kept him as a singer, then worked with producers King Tubby, Prince Jammy, and Donovan Germain, before signing a two-year contract with Steely & Clevie in 1990, recording a song for the album for them. It was a production duo who decided to change his name to Garnet Silk, referring to his subtle voice. Only one of the songs recorded during this period, "We Can Be Together," a duet with Chevelle Franklin, was actually released at the time, and desperate by this, he returned to Manchester and threw himself into songwriting, often in partnership with old friend, Anthony "Fire" Rochester.

Another meeting with Tony Rebel brought an introduction to Courtney Cole, owner of the Roof International label. Silk will record a large number of songs in the studio producer Ocho Rios, among them the hits "Mama," "Seven Spanish Angels," and the cover of Johnny Nash's classic "I Can See Clearly Now". Roof International will posthumously combine these early singles and other currently recorded material for the Nothing Can Divide Us album, which the VP label is drawn for the US.

In 1992, Silk was in Kingston in studio with producer Bobby Digital, recording her debut album It's Growing. Shared between deep cultural themes, spiritual songs, and romantic numbers, the album went on to become one of the best selling in Jamaica that year, and he had his first hit single with "Hey Mama Africa" â € <â € < <(Produced by Richard "Bello" Bell) for the Star Trail label, which is Silk's first international hit, and topped the reggae charts in the UK.

Over the next two years, the singer will record with most of the big name manufacturers on the island, both alone and in partnership with Tony Rebel. He cut the songs with King Jammy, including "Our Content With Your Dad" and "Lord Watch Over Our Shoulders." The latter song titled Compilation 1994 was released by the Greensleeves label in the UK and offers seven pieces of Jammy and clutch hits for other manufacturers.

1993 Gold , released by British Charm label, bundled more hits from this period. Among them are "Zion in a Vision," Jamaican number one with producer Jack Scorpio, and "Hey Mama Africa". he also recorded for Sly & amp; Robbie, including the deeply religious "Thank You, Jah" and the haunting "Green Line". But his speed became too much and Silk collapsed during a show at the Ritz in New York City, suffering from low blood pressure and fatigue. The exhausted singer was forced to cancel all appearances scheduled for the next six months, most important of all, what would be his debut at Reggae Sumfest. However, Silk bounced back in 1994 and returned to work. To show goodness, he rejoined Steely & amp; Clevie and single piece "Love Is the Answer", another big hit. "Fight Back," produced by Richie Stephens, is the next one. At that time, the singer is ready to return to the stage, which he did with retaliation, with the festival titles Reggae Sumfest and Reggae Sunsplash this year. Her set at the last show was captured for the album Live at Reggae Sunsplash 1994 , released in 1999 by Tabou1 label. The silk backing band is Jahpostles, which originally formed in the late 1970s.

Death

After signing an international distribution deal with Atlantic Records, Silk is now entering Tuff Gong studio with producer Errol Brown and Jamaica male session cream (including Aston Barrett, Sly & Robbie, Tyrone Downie, Earl "Chinna" Smith and Uziah "Sticky" Thompson ), to start working on her second album. He has recorded ten songs and the album is almost finished when he returns home to visit his mother. The director borrowed a pair of weapons from his lawyer after his home was burglarized, but did not know how to use them. Sitting with some friends at his mother's house in Mandeville, Jamaica, on December 9, one offered to show him how they worked, by then the gun was accidentally shot, hit the propane tank and set fire to the house. The singer, her friends, and her two brothers manage to get out safely, only to find that Silk's mother is still trapped inside. The singer rushed back to the house to save her, but it was too late and both were lost in the fire.

Posthumous

Sutra music has been preserved alive by several awards, including Macka B's "Tribute to Garnett Silk" and Earth Day concerts, and many compilation albums, including two collections of rank, Kilamanjaro Remembering Garnett Silk (Jam Down , 1999) and Rule Dem (Trojan/Sanctuary 2006).

In 2000, Atlantic finally released The Definitive Collection, a set of two CDs featuring ten songs the singer recorded during a session for an unfinished second album.

Son Silk, Garnet Smith Jr. has followed him in a career in music.

Nephew Director Anthony Cruz recorded a tribute album in 2013, featuring a cover version of fifteen Silk songs.
