Unlike the first album, Candy-O is made with a more democratic approach. Ric Ocasek said this, "When one of my songs went to the band in the simplest tape form, we sat down and talked about it.If I lost the vote, we did not do it.We barely put 'Double Life' on the new album, it has fallen I think everyone in the Car is open-minded and creative enough that they will do anything - nothing to hold back Anyone appreciates a more radical kind of experimental music and likes it.But sometimes, when you are put together with five parts, things are not as small as they should be or should be.Everyone develops a unique personal style, and we depend on their input. If they do, that's good enough. "
Most of the songs in Candy-O were written after the release of The Cars , meaning that most of the rest of the first album (including the popular "Take What You Want") encore ; "Night Spots", the rejection of the first album, is still included.
For the album, the band once again worked with producer Queen Roy Thomas Baker. Ocasek said of their relationship with the producer, "Well, some things on the first album that we thought were a bit slippery, we softened the second, like on a vocal background, but if we were going to rely on the producers we had rented, there was no reason to try and change it.On the second album, it's easier to say, 'Roy, do not do multi-tracked harmony this time. ' "
The band's label, Elektra, originally wanted to hold back the album release, but the band stood on their ground. Ocasek said this, "At first Elektra wanted to hold him, but we told them there was no way, because if they would hold him, they would hold us, and we could not just sit around and be held." Released as a follow-up to the 1978 hit album they The Cars , Candy-O peak at No. 3 on Billboard 200. The album re-entered the charts at No. 179 in 1984. The record was also ranked 82nd in the Billboard chart ' s "Album Top of the Year" for 1979.
Three singles were lifted from Candy-O : "Let's Go" hit No. 14, making it the first Top 20 Cars single, "It's All I Can Do" peaked at No. 1. 41, almost lost Top 40, and "Double Life" failed to map.

Art cover
The cover of this album is painted by artist Alberto Vargas, who is known for painting pin-up girls who appeared in Esquire and Playboy magazines in the 1940s and 1960s. The idea to recruit Vargas came from drummer David Robinson, the band's artistic director and pin-up collector. The 83-year-old Vargas had retired several years earlier but was convinced to take up the task by his niece, who is a Car enthusiast. The painting, depicting a woman lying on the hood of a car, is based on a photographed directed by Robinson at a Ferrari dealer. The model, coincidentally named Candy Moore (famous for having played the daughter of Lucille Ball's screen on The Lucy Show), briefly dates Robinson afterward.
Critical reception
Candy-O has received a positive response from critics. AllMusic critic Greg Prato says that "while the album is not as beautiful as its predecessor The Cars is, it does contain some classics, resulting in another smash album that established the band's stand as one of the most promising new bands of the late 70s Music critic Robert Christgau said in his review that the album was "cool and thin, shiny and hypnotic, that's what they do most - rock and roll that definitely comes without a bit of a cuteness".
Rolling Stone critic Tom Carson said, "It's almost inevitable that Candy-O, Cars's second album, seems to be not as interesting as their first." The element of the Surprise has disappeared, and the band has not can produce something new to replace it. Candy-O is an elaborate, lively, entertaining LP packed with good stuff, a good title but a bit too disciplined, a color too predictable. "Hamish Champ, author of 100 Best Selling Albums of the 70s , said" With British producer Roy Thomas Baker once again behind the deck, Ric Ocasek and his colleagues produced a follow-up to their highly successful debuted with more of the same strange and unique songs that have caused this uproar for the first time.
