Book signing is affixing a signature to the title page or flyleaf of the book by the author. Bookmarks are events, usually in bookstores or libraries, where an author sits and signs books during a period.

The book signing is popular because authors' signatures increase the book value for collectors. Authors can add a short message to the reader, called dedication, to each book, which may be personalized with the name of the recipient on request. Simple authors' signatures without dedication are usually more valuable to collectors (exceptions include inscriptions to recorded persons, for example, from Hemingway to Fitzgerald, or to important people in the author's life).
Sometimes an author will sign additional copies for future sales. An additional advantage for writers to do this is that once a book has been signed, it can not be returned to the publisher for a refund.
Many authors today spend a lot of time signing their books, and sign thousands of copies. For example, John Green signed all 150,000 copies of the first print of his 2012 novel The Fault in Our Stars .
The growing popularity of ebooks and ereading devices has inspired the development of software - such as Authorgraph (formerly known as Kindlegraph and renamed to reflect the expansion to include all ereading platforms) and Autography (for iOS devices) - allowing authors to personalize ebook digitally, signatures, dedications, and photographs, and to provide such personalization from a distance and also to book signing directly. Like the authors of software benefits, "who are not required to go on a long-distance tour for e-book signatures for their fans", as well as readers who do not want or dare the crowd and miss the line on book signing onsite. Before such applications are introduced, the effort to bridge the digital divide for those who read e-books includes having authors sign the back of their eereading reader devices or sign ebooks via direct stylus inputs (for example, on Sony Reader Touch or Palm eReader).

The book signing provides more than just a chance to get a signature. Authors and bookstores benefit from the fact that many copies of promoted books are sold at these events. The signing also improves public goodwill and allows authors to connect with their fans. For fans, signing provides an opportunity to see and meet favorite authors and ask questions to them.
The development of social media platforms allows modern authors to sign virtual books. For example, The Goodereader and Autography jointly host an ebook with the author of HP Mallory, where Mallory greets fans through Spreecast, a social connectivity platform that allows users to have up to four guests on a video chat at a time, to perform Q & A session with more participants, and to maintain a channel on the site, thereby recording and storing Spreecast and assigning a recording of the URL to be shared at other outlets.
Many authors use the LiveSigning book signing platform to host on a large scale, streaming video bookmarking with their fans. Donald Trump organizes book signing on this platform during his presidential campaign in December 2015. Books taking in LiveSigning usually consist of authors who signed books, answered questions from fans, and made phone calls to multiple fans. After the event, signed books are sent to everyone who buys signed copies.
