Apple coprocessors series are the motion coprocessors used by Apple Inc. on their mobile device. First released in 2013, its function is to collect sensor data from accelerometers, gyroscopes, and integrated compasses, and move data collection and processing sensors from a central central processing unit (CPU).

As of May 2017, the M-series processor so far released is M7 (codename Oscar ), M8 , M9 , M10, and M11 . M7 introduced in September 2013 with iPhone 5S and updated version, M8 introduced in September 2014 with iPhone 6 and also process data from barometer included in iPhone 6 and iPad Air 2. September 2015 carrying M9 coprocessor movement embedded in chip A9 found in iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, iPhone SE and in the A9X chip found on iPad Pro. IPhone 7, 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro featuring M10 movement coprocessor. Apple announced the latest addition to its motion coprocessors, M11, found on iPhone 8, 8 Plus and iPhone X.

Chipworks found that M7 is most likely a NXP LPC1800 microcontroller called LPC18A1 . It uses the ARM Cortex-M3 core with a special packaging and naming scheme that indicates that it is for Apple-adjusted parts. iFixit has identified the M8 on the iPhone 6 to be a NXP device with a very similar name, LPC18B1 .

Usage

Apple M7, M8, M9, M10, and M11 processors collect, process and store sensor data even if the device is asleep, and the app can retrieve data when the device is turned on again. This reduces device appeal and saves battery life. In addition to serving accelerometers, gyroscopes, compasses, and in M8 and later coprocessors, barometers, M9 coprocessors can recognize Siri voice commands from microphones built into the device.

M-series motion coprocessors can be accessed by apps via the iOS Core Motion API introduced in iOS 7, allowing them, for example, to allow fitness apps that track physical activity and access data from the M processor without being persistent. involves the main application processor. They allow apps to know what kind of movements a user is experiencing, such as driving, walking, running, or sleeping. Other applications can be the ability to do tracking and mapping in the room. In iOS 10, motion coprocessor is used to implement enhancements to functional builds reducing idle power usage.
