Windows 10 (code name Redstone , previously Threshold ) is a personal computer operating system developed and released by Microsoft, as part of the Windows NT family of operating system. This album was released on July 29, 2015. This is the first version of Windows to receive feature updates in progress. Devices in a corporate environment may receive this update at a slower pace, or use long-term support milestones that receive only critical updates, such as security patches, for a period of ten years of extended support.
Windows 10 introduces what Microsoft calls "universal applications"; expanding on Metro style apps, this app can be designed to run on multiple Microsoft product families with almost identical code? -? Includes PC, tablet, smartphone, embedded system, Xbox One, Surface Hub, and Mixed Reality. Windows user interface revised to handle transitions between mouse-oriented interfaces and touch-optimized interface based on available input devices? -? Especially on 2-in-1 PCs; both interfaces include an updated Start menu that combines traditional Windows 7 Start menu elements with Windows 8 tiles. The first release of Windows 10 also introduces virtual desktop systems, windows and desktop management features called Task Display, Microsoft Edge web browser, support for fingerprint logins and facial recognition, new security features for enterprise environments, and DirectX 12 and WDDM 2.0 to improve the operating system graphics capabilities for gaming.
Windows 10 received most positive reviews of its original release in July 2015; critics hailed Microsoft's decision to provide desktop-oriented interface in accordance with previous versions of Windows, in contrast to the tablet-oriented 8 approach, although the screen-oriented user interface mode of Windows 10 has been scanned because it contains regressions in the touch-oriented Windows interface. 8. Critics also praised the upgrading of Windows 10 software bundle through Windows 8.1, Xbox Live integration, as well as the functionality and capabilities of Cortana's personal assistant and the replacement of Internet Explorer with Microsoft Edge. However, media outlets have been critical of changes in operating system behavior, including mandatory update installation, privacy concerns over data collection performed by the OS for Microsoft and its partners, and tactics such as adware used to promote the operating system at launch.
Microsoft aims to install Windows 10 on at least one billion devices in two to three years after its release. Until August 2016, the use of Windows 10 increased, with it then became stable, while in 2018, it became more popular than Windows 7 (although still more widely used in most countries in Asia and Africa), and thus the most widely used The Windows version as a whole (at 46.07%, so others are more widely used), though not on some continents as measured by web traffic. In November 2017, the operating system runs on more than 600 million devices and has an estimated usage share of 32% on traditional PCs and 15% across all platforms (PCs, phones, tablets and consoles).

Development
At Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference in 2011, Andrew Lees, head of Microsoft's mobile technology, said the company intends to have one software ecosystem for PCs, mobile phones, tablets and other devices. "We will not have an ecosystem for PCs, and one for mobile phones, and one for tablets? - they'll all come along."
In December 2013, technology writer Mary Jo Foley reported that Microsoft is working on an update for Windows 8 code-named "Threshold", after a planet in the video game franchise of Microsoft Halo . Similarly for "Blue" (which became Windows 8.1), Foley referred to Threshold as an "operating system wave" on various Microsoft platforms and services, scheduled for the second quarter of 2015. Foley reported that among the goals for Threshold is to create an application platform and toolkit development for Windows, Windows Phone and Xbox One (all of which use the same Windows NT kernel).
In April 2014, at Build Conference, Microsoft Terry Myerson launched the latest version of Windows 8.1 which adds the ability to run Windows Store apps inside the windows desktop and the more traditional Start menu as a replacement for the Start screen that is visible in Windows 8. New Start menu takes after design Windows 7 by just using a portion of the screen and include a list of Windows 7-style apps in the first column. The second column displays Windows 8-style app tiles. Myerson said that this change will happen in the future of the update, but did not elaborate. Microsoft also launched the concept of "universal Windows applications", which allows Windows Store apps to be created for Windows 8.1 for porting to Windows Phone 8.1 and Xbox One while sharing common codebase, with interfaces designed for various device form factors, and enabling data users and licenses for apps to share among multiple platforms. Windows Phone 8.1 will share almost 90% of common Windows Runtime APIs with Windows 8.1 on PC.
A screenshot of a Windows build that supposedly became Threshold leaked in July 2014, shows the previously-presented Start menu and Windows Store Windows app followed by a further screenshot in September 2014 of a build that identifies itself as a "Windows Technical Preview", numbered 9834, shows a new virtual desktop system, notification center, and a new File Explorer icon.
Announcement
Threshold was officially unveiled during a media event on September 30, 2014, under the name Windows 10; Myerson said that Windows 10 will be Microsoft's "most comprehensive ever platform," providing a single and unified platform for desktop computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones and all-in-one devices. He stressed that Windows 10 will take steps to restore user interface mechanics from Windows 7 to improve the experience for users on non-touch devices, noting criticism of the Windows 8 touch-oriented interface by keyboard and mouse users. Despite this concession, Myerson notes that the touch-oriented interface will evolve also at 10.
Regarding Microsoft naming the new Windows 10 operating system instead of Windows 9, Terry Myerson said that "based on upcoming products, and how different our overall approach would be, it would not be right to call it Windows 9." He also jokes that they can not call it "Windows One "(referring to some recent Microsoft products with similar brands, such as OneDrive, OneNote, and Xbox One) because Windows 1.0 already exists. Tony Prophet, Microsoft Vice President of Windows Marketing, told a San Francisco conference in October 2014 that Windows 9 "came and went", and that Windows 10 is not an "additional step of Windows 8.1," but a "material move." We're trying to make one platform, an eco-system that brings together multiple devices from the small Internet of Things, via tablets, over the phone, via PC and, ultimately, to the Xbox. "
More details about the consumer-oriented features of Windows 10 were presented during another media event held on January 21, 2015, entitled "Windows 10: The Next Chapter". Key features featuring Cortana integration opening in the operating system, new Xbox-oriented features, Windows 10 Mobile, updated Office Mobile suite, Surface Hub? -? Windows 10 large screen device for enterprise collaboration based on Pixel Perceptive technology, along with HoloLens-augmented reality lens and related platforms to build applications that can create holograms via HoloLens.
Additional details related to the developers surrounding the "Universal Windows Platform" concept are revealed and discussed during the developer conference of Microsoft Develop . Among them is the launch of "Islandwood", which provides middleware toolchain to compile Objective-C-based software (especially, iOS software) to run universal applications on Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile. A port of Candy Crush Saga was created using the toolkit, which shares a lot of code with the iOS version, shown, along with the announcement that the King-developed game will be bundled with Windows 10 at launch.
Release
On June 1, 2015, Microsoft announced that Windows 10 will be released on July 29, 2015. Microsoft started the Windows 10-based ad campaign, "Improve Your World", on July 20, 2015 with premiere television commercials in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The ad focuses on the tagline "A more humane way to do", emphasizing new features and technologies supported by Windows 10 that seek to provide a more "personal" experience to users. The campaign culminated with a launch event in 13 cities on July 29, celebrating "an unprecedented role played by our biggest fans in the development of Windows 10".

Features
Windows 10 aligns user experience and functionality between different device classes, and address deficiencies in the user interface introduced in Windows 8. Windows 10 Mobile, the successor of Windows Phone 8.1, shares some user interface elements and applications with its PC partners.
The Windows Runtime app ecosystem was revised to Universal Windows Platform (UWP). This universal app is built to run on multiple platforms and device classes, including smartphones, tablets, Xbox One consoles, and other compatible Windows 10 devices. Windows applications share code across platforms, have responsive design that adapts to device requirements and available input, can sync data between Windows 10 devices (including notifications, credentials, and cross platform multiplayer enabled for games), and distributed via Microsoft Store (replaced brand from the Windows Store since September 2017). Developers may allow "cross purchase", where purchased licenses for the app apply to all user-compatible devices, not just purchased (for example, users who purchase apps on PCs are also eligible to use smartphone versions). at no additional cost).
In Windows 10, the Microsoft Store serves as an integrated storefront for apps, video content, and ebooks. Windows 10 also allows web applications and desktop software (either using Win32 or.NET Framework) to be packaged for distribution in the Microsoft Store. Desktop software that is distributed through Windows Store is packaged using App-V system to allow sandboxing.
The user interface and desktop
New iterations from the Start menu are used on the Windows 10 desktop, with a list of places and other options on the left side, and a tile representing the app on the right. The menu can be resized, and expanded to a full-screen view, which is the default option in Tablet mode. New virtual desktop system added. The feature known as Task Display displays all open windows and allows users to switch between them, or switch between multiple workspaces. Universal apps, previously only available in full screen mode, can now be used in standalone windows similar to other programs. The program window can now be loaded into the screen quadrant by dragging it into a corner. When a window is slapped to one side of the screen, the Task Display appears and the user is prompted to select a second window to fill the unused side of the screen (called "Snap Assist"). The Windows system icon also changes.
The charm has been removed; their functionality in universal applications is accessed from the Applications command menu in the title bar. Instead it is the Action Center, which displays notifications and settings toggles. This is accessed by clicking on the icon in the notification area, or dragging from the right of the screen. Notifications can be synchronized between multiple devices. The Settings (previously PC Settings) app has been refreshed and now includes more options previously exclusive to Desktop Control Panel.
Windows 10 is designed to customize the user interface based on the type of device used and the available input method. It offers two separate user interface modes: optimized user interface for mouse and keyboard, and "Tablet mode" designed for touch screen. Users can switch between these modes at any time, and Windows can prompt or automatically switch when certain events occur, such as disabling Tablet mode on a tablet if the keyboard or mouse is plugged in, or when the 2-in-1 PC switches to the status of the laptop. In Tablet mode, the default program to maximized view, and the taskbar contains the back button and hide the button to open or embed the program; The Task View is used instead to switch between programs. The full-screen Start menu is used in this mode, similar to Windows 8, but scrolling vertically instead of horizontally.
System security
Windows 10 incorporates multi-factor authentication technology based on the standards developed by the FIDO Alliance. The operating system includes enhanced support for biometric authentication via the Windows Hello platform. Devices with supported cameras (requiring infrared illumination, such as Intel RealSense) allow users to enter with iris or facial recognition, similar to Kinect. Devices with supported readers allow users to enter through fingerprint recognition. Support was also added for palm-vein scanning through partnership with Fujitsu in February 2018. Credentials are stored locally and protected using asymmetric encryption.
When Windows 10 was first introduced, multi-factor authentication was provided by two components: Windows Hello and Passport (not to be confused with Passport 1998 platform). Then, Passport merged into Windows Hello.
The enterprise version of Windows 10 offers additional security features; administrators can set policies for automatic encryption of sensitive data, selectively block applications from accessing encrypted data, and enable the Device Guard ? -? system that allows administrators to enforce a high security environment by blocking software executions that are not digitally signed by a trusted vendor or Microsoft. Device Guard is designed to protect against zero-day exploitation, and runs within the hypervisor so that its operation remains separate from the operating system itself.
Command line
The Birthday Update adds a Windows Subsystem for Linux, which allows the installation of user space environments from supported Linux distributions that run natively on Windows. The subsystem translates the Linux system calls that Linux systems use to the Windows NT kernel. The environment can run Bash shell programs and 64-bit command line. Windows applications can not run from the Linux environment, and vice versa. Linux Distribution for Windows Subsystem for Linux is obtained through Microsoft Store. This feature originally supported the Ubuntu-based environment; Microsoft announced in May 2017 that it would add to the Fedora and OpenSUSE environment options as well.
Storage requirements
To reduce the operating system storage footprint, Windows 10 automatically compresses system files. This system can reduce the Windows storage footprint of about 1.5 GB for 32-bit systems and 2.6 GB for 64-bit systems. The level of compression used depends on the performance assessment performed during the installation or by the OEM, which tests how much compression can be used without damaging the operating system performance. Additionally, the Refresh and Reset function uses a runtime system file instead, creating a separate redundant recovery partition, allowing patches and updates to remain installed after the operation, and further reducing the amount of space needed for Windows 10 to 12 GB. These functions replace the Wimboot mode introduced in Windows 8.1 Update, which allows OEMs to configure low-capacity devices with flash-based storage to use Windows system files from compressed WIM imagery commonly used for installation and recovery. Windows 10 also includes a function in the Settings app that allows users to see details about how their device's storage capacity is used by different file types, and to determine whether certain file types are saved to internal storage or SD cards by default.
Online services and functions
Windows 10 introduces a new default web browser, Microsoft Edge. It features a standard rendering engine that branches off Trident, annotation tools, and offers integration with other Microsoft platforms that exist in Windows 10. Internet Explorer 11 is maintained on Windows 10 for compatibility purposes, but no longer supports Edge and will not exist any more active developed.
Windows 10 combines Microsoft's smart personal assistant, Cortana, which was first introduced with Windows Phone 8.1 in 2014. Cortana replaces the embedded Windows search feature, which supports text and voice input. Many of its features are a direct switch from Windows Phone, including integration with Bing, reminder settings, Notebook features to manage personal information, and search for files, play music, launch apps, and set reminders or send emails. Cortana is implemented as a universal search box located next to the Start button and Task View, which can be hidden or condensed onto a single button.
Microsoft Family Safety is replaced by Microsoft Family, a parental control system that applies across Windows platforms and Microsoft online services. Users can create designated families, and monitor and limit user-defined actions as children, such as access to websites, enforce age ratings on Microsoft Store purchases, and other restrictions. The service can also send a weekly e-mail report to parents detailing the use of a child's computer. Unlike previous versions of Windows, a child account in the family must be associated with a Microsoft account? -? Which allows this setting to be applied across all Windows 10 devices used by a particular child.
Windows 10 also offers a Wi-Fi Sense feature that comes from Windows Phone 8.1; users can optionally have their device automatically connect to recommended open hotspots, and share their home network password with contacts (either via Skype, People, or Facebook) so they can automatically connect to the network on Windows 10 devices without the need to enter manually password. The credentials are stored in encrypted form on Microsoft servers, and sent to the device from the selected contact. Passwords are not visible to guest users, and guest users are not allowed to access computers or other devices on the network. Wi-Fi Sense can not be used on 802.1X-encrypted network. Adding "_optout" at the end of the SSID will also block the affected network from being used for this feature.
The universal call and message app for Windows 10 has been built on November 2015 updates: Messages, Skype Videos, and Phones. It offers built-in alternative to download and sync Skype with Windows 10 Mobile.
Rich media and games
Windows 10 provides heavier integration with the Xbox ecosystem. Xbox SmartGlass is replaced by the Xbox app, which allows users to browse their game libraries (including PC and Xbox console games), and Game DVR is also available using keyboard shortcuts, allowing users to save the last 30 seconds of gameplay as shareable videos to Xbox Live, OneDrive, or elsewhere. Windows 10 also allows users to control and play games from the Xbox One console over the local network. Xbox Live SDK allows app developers to incorporate Xbox Live functionality into their apps, and future Xbox One accessories, such as controllers, are supported on Windows with an adapter. Microsoft also intends to allow cross-purchase and save synchronization between Xbox One and Windows 10 game versions; Microsoft Studios games like ReCore and Quantum Break are intended as exclusive to Windows 10 and Xbox One.
The Candy Crush Saga and Microsoft Solitaire Collection are also automatically installed during Windows 10 installation.
Windows 10 adds original game recording and capture capture capabilities using the newly introduced game bar. Users can also have an OS that continues to record games in the background, which then allows the user to save the last few, configurable users, game moments to the hard disk.
Windows 10 adds FLAC and HEVC codecs and support for Matroska media containers, enabling this format to be opened in Windows Media Player and other applications.
DirectX 12
Windows 10 includes DirectX 12, along with WDDM 2.0. Inaugurated March 2014 at GDC, DirectX 12 aims to provide "console level efficiency" with "closer to metal" access to hardware resources, and reduce CPU and graphic drive overhead. Most performance improvements are achieved through low-level programming, allowing developers to use resources more efficiently and reduce the bottlenecking of single-threaded CPUs caused by abstraction through higher level APIs. DirectX 12 will also display support for multi-GPU agnostic vendor settings. WDDM 2.0 introduces new virtual memory management and allocation systems to reduce workload in kernel-mode drivers.
Deleted features
Windows Media Center is discontinued, and uninstalled when updating from previous versions of Windows. Windows Installation enhanced with Media Center will receive free Windows DVD Player paid apps for a limited time, but not specified. Microsoft has previously delegated Media Center and integrated DVD playback support to the paid add-on that starts on Windows 8 due to licensing fees required for patent-related DVD playback, and an increasing number of PC devices that do not have an optical drive.
The built-in OneDrive sync client, introduced in Windows 8.1, no longer supports offline placeholders for file-only files in Windows 10. This function is added back in Windows 10 version 1709, under the name "OneDrive Files On-Demand".
Users will no longer be able to sync the Start menu layout on all devices associated with a Microsoft account. Microsoft developers justify the change by explaining that users may have different apps they want to emphasize on every device they use, rather than using the same configuration on each device. The ability to install universal apps automatically on all devices associated with the account is also deleted.
The web browser can no longer establish itself as the default user without further intervention; changing the default web browser must be done manually by the user from the "Default app" Settings page, as if to prevent browser hijacking.
Parental controls no longer support browsers other than Internet Explorer and Edge, and the ability to control whitelisted browsing has been removed. Also removed is the ability to control local accounts, and the ability to scan machines for applications to allow and block.
Food & amp; Beverage, Health & amp; Fitness and Travel apps have been discontinued.
The drivers for floppy drives are no longer integrated and must be downloaded separately.
While all editions of Windows 10 include fonts that provide extensive language support, some fonts for Middle Eastern and East Asian languages ââ(Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, etc.) are no longer included with standard installations to reduce the storage space used, but is available at no cost as an optional font package. When the software calls text in a language other than the one for which the system is configured and does not use the Windows font replacement mechanism designed to always display a readable glyphs, Windows displays unsupported characters as default glyph "undefined", rectangular or rectangular, or boxes with dots, question marks or "x" inside.
Windows Defender can be integrated into the File Explorer context menu in Windows 8.x, but Microsoft initially deletes the integration of Windows 10, recovering it in Windows 10 build 10571 in response to user feedback.
User control over Windows Update removed (except in company version). In previous versions, users can choose updates to be installed automatically, or notified so they can update when and when they want, or not to be notified; and they can select updates to install, using information about updates. Windows users 10 Pro and Enterprise can be configured by an administrator to delay updates, but only for a limited time. Under the Windows end-user license agreement, the user accepts automatic installation of all updates, features and drivers provided by the service, and implicitly approves "without additional notice" for possible modified or deleted features.
Features removed on version 1607
Cortana can no longer be completely hidden, because it makes the default search experience in the Windows shell for all users (in previous revisions, the general search experience without Cortana branding and functionality is used if disabled). As with previous builds, users must keep selecting and granting permission for the software to perform data collection and tracking to fully enable Cortana personalization features. If this function is not enabled, Cortana operates in a limited feature mode with basic web and device search functions, almost identical to non-Cortana search experience in previous versions.
In April 2016, Microsoft announced that it no longer allowed Cortana web search to be executed through web browsers and other search engine combinations, except Microsoft Edge and Bing, purposely ignoring user settings. Microsoft states that the avoidance of these settings (which can be solved with third-party software) results in "less reliable and predictable disturbing experiences," and only Microsoft Edge supports direct integration with Cortana in the browser itself.
Certain features associated with embedded ads in the operating system can no longer be disabled in non-enterprise Windows 10 versions using management settings such as Group Policy, including disabling the Microsoft Store and Universal Windows Platform apps, "Microsoft consumer experience" (which pushes tiles into menu ads Start promoting Microsoft Store apps, typically following a new installation of Windows 10), Windows Tips, turn off the lock screen (which can optionally show ads as part of the "Spotlight" tips), or enforce the background of a particular lock screen. Critics argue that this change is intended to prevent Windows 10 Pro from being used in business environments, as Microsoft makes it less attractive by reducing the number of administrator controls over their device environment without using the company. version of Windows 10.
The ability to share Wi-Fi credentials with other contacts via Wi-Fi Sense has been removed; Wi-Fi passwords can still be synced between devices connected to the same Microsoft account.
Ability to change Windows Exit, Windows Logoff and Windows Logon sounds are hidden in Version 1607, although this feature can be enabled by going to Windows Registry and under the EventLabels folder and setting the value to 0.
Features removed in versions 1703 and 1709
Windows updates will no longer delay certain important update downloads if the device is connected to the network designated by the user as "measured". While it is intended to prevent updates from using the data allotment, this behavior has been used as a solution by users to avoid the requirement that all updates be downloaded automatically.
Devices containing Intel Atom's "Clover Trail" on-chip systems are not compatible with Version 1703, and can not be upgraded to this version of Windows 10.
Message Block Server version 1 (SMB1) is disabled by default in version 1709. Home and Pro editions only disable SMB1 servers, but retain SMB1 clients, so they can connect to SMB1 network shares. Enterprise and Education edition completely disables SMB1. This version of the 30-year protocol became well known in the WannaCry ransomware attacks, although Microsoft has played down its usage even before.
The Interactive Service Detection Service, introduced in Windows Vista to combat a devastating attack, was removed in 1703. Syskey was removed in 1709, with Microsoft recommending the use of Bitlocker instead.
Features removed in version 1803
HomeGroup, a home network sharing feature that was first introduced in Windows 7, was deleted. This is replaced by a new feature called "Sharing Nearby."
Editions and prices
Windows 10 is available in five major editions for personal computer devices, the versions of Home and Pro are sold in retail in most countries, and as software pre-loaded on the computer. Home is intended for home users, while Pro is for small businesses. Each edition of Windows Ã, 10 includes all the capabilities and features of the lower edition, and adds additional features oriented to their market segments; for example, Pro adds additional network and security features such as BitLocker, Device Guard, Windows Update for Business, and the ability to join the domain. The remaining editions, Enterprise and Education , contain additional features intended for the business environment, and are available only through volume licensing.
As part of Microsoft's unification strategy, Windows products are based on the common Windows 10 platform but are intended for specific platforms marketed as operating system editions, not as separate product lines. The latest version of Microsoft Windows Phone operating system for smartphones, as well as tablets, is branded as Windows 10 Mobile . The Enterprise and Mobile editions will also be produced for embedded systems, along with Windows 10 IoT Core , specifically designed for use in small footprints. , low-cost devices, and the Internet of Things (IoT) scenario and is similar to Windows Embedded.
On May 2, 2017, Microsoft launched the Windows iOS S (referred to in leak as Windows 10 Cloud ), a limited version of Windows 10 designed primarily for devices in the education market (competing , in particular, with Chrome OS netbooks), such as the Surface Laptop that Microsoft also launched today. OS limits software installation for applications obtained from Microsoft Store; devices can be upgraded to Windows 10 Pro at a cost to enable unlimited software installation. As a limited time promotion, Microsoft claims that this increase will be free on Surface Laptops until March 31, 2018. Windows 10 S also contains faster initial setup and login, and allows the device to be provided using a USB drive with the Windows Intune for Education Platform. In March 2018, Microsoft announced that Windows 10 S would be terminated due to market confusion, and would be replaced by "S Mode", an OEM option in which the default Windows only allows applications to be installed from the Microsoft Store, but does not require payment to disable this restriction.
Release preview
The public beta program for Windows 10 known as the Windows Insider Program starts with the first publicly available preview release on October 1, 2014. Insider preview of people intended for fans and users company for testing and evaluation of updates and new features. Windows Insider program users receive occasional updates to preview new versions of the operating system and will continue to be able to evaluate the preview release after general availability (GA) in July 2015? -? This is in contrast to previous Windows beta programs, where public preview creation is released less frequently and only during the months before GA. Insider Windows Insider continues to be released after release to manufacturing (RTM) Windows Ã, 10.
Public release
Microsoft is promoting that Windows 10 will become publicly available (GA) on July 29, 2015. Compared to previous Windows releases, which have had another shift between release to manufacturing (RTM) and general release to allow testing by vendors (and in some cases development "upgrade kit" to set up the system for installing new versions), HP Inc. executives explained that since it knows Microsoft is targeting the operating system for release in 2015, the company can optimize it then-current and upcoming products for Windows 10 before its launch, negating the need for such milestones.
Windows general availability 10, number 10240, was first released on July 15, 2015 to the Windows Insider channel for pre-launch testing before its official release. Although a Microsoft official said that there would be no specific RTM building Windows 10, 10240 was described as a RTM built by a media outlet because it was released to all Windows Insider members at once (not to users on the "Fast ring" first), it was no longer pre- -related branding and desktop text watermark, and since the build number has mathematical connections to the number 10 refers to the naming of the operating system. Enterprise edition released to volume license on August 1, 2015.
Users can perform on-site upgrades through the "Get Windows Ã, 10" (GWX) and Windows Update app, or "Media Creation Tool" app, which is functionally identical to the Windows 8 online installer, and can also be used to generate an ISO image or USB installation media. On-site upgrades are supported from most editions of Windows 7 with Service Pack 1 and Windows Ã, 8.1 with Update 1, while users with Windows 8 must first upgrade to Windows < span> Ã, 8.1. Changing between architectures (for example, upgrading from 32-bit edition to 64-bit edition) through in-place unsupported enhancements; a clean installation is required. On-site upgrades can be redirected back to previous versions of Windows on the device, provided that 30 days have not been passed since installation, and backup files are not deleted using Disk Cleanup.
Windows 10 is available in 190 countries and 111 languages ââafter its release, and as part of a "re-engage" effort with users in China, Microsoft also announced that it will partner with Qihoo and Tencent to help promote and distribute Windows Ã, 10 in China, and Chinese PC maker Lenovo will provide help at service centers and retail outlets to help users upgrade to Windows Ã, 10. Retail by Windows 10 the same price as the Windows 8.1 edition, with US prices set at $ 119 and $ 199 for Windows 10 Ã, Home and Pro respectively. The Windows 10 Pro Pack license allows upgrades from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro . Retail copy is delivered on USB flash drive or DVD-ROM media. The new device that shipped with Windows 10 was also released during the operating system launch window.
Windows RT device can not be upgraded to Windows Ã, 10.
Free upgrades
During the first year of availability (ending July 29, 2016), an upgrade license for Windows Ã, 10 may be obtained at no cost to a device with original license for a qualified Windows edition 7 or Ã, 8.1. This offer does not apply to Enterprise edition , because the customer under active Software Assurance contract (SA) with upgrade rights is eligible to get Windows 10 Enterprise in under existing terms. All users who run non-genuine copy of Windows, and who do not have Windows license 7 or 8, are not eligible for this promotion; although an increase from an unauthentic version is possible, they generate a non-original copy of Ã, 10.
On general availability of building Windows Ã, 10, to enable and generate "digital rights" for Windows Ã, 10, the operating system must first be installed as an upgrade. Once installed, the operating system can be reinstalled on that particular system through the normal means without a product key, and the system license will automatically be detected through online activation. Starting November 2015, Windows 8.1 existing key products may be included during installation to enable free licenses, without the need to upgrade first to "enable" the hardware by Microsoft activation server. The preview version of Windows Insider Windows Ã, 10 automatically updates itself to the generally released version as part of the development version, and is constantly updated to the new beta, as it was during the testing process. Microsoft explicitly states that Windows Insider is not a valid upgrade path for those running Windows versions that do not qualify for increased bids; though, if not installed with a license brought from an in-place upgrade to 10 Insider Preview from Windows Ã, 7 or Ã, 8, Insider Preview remains enabled as long as the user does not exit the Windows Insider program.
This offer is promoted and submitted via the "Get Windows Ã, 10" ("GWX") app, which is automatically installed via Windows Update prior to Windows 10 release, and is enabled on systems deemed eligible for upgrade offer. Through the notification area icon, users can access apps that advertise Windows Ã, 10 and free upgrade offer, check device compatibility, and "order" the operating system's automatic download after launch. On July 28, the pre-download process begins where the Windows installation files 10 are downloaded to some of the computers that have ordered them. Microsoft says that those who order Windows 10 will be able to install it via GWX in the staged rollout process. The operating system can be downloaded alternatively at any time by using a separate "Media Creation Tool" setting program (similar to the Windows setup program 8), which allows for DVD creation or USB installation media.
Microsoft announced in May 2016 that the free upgrade offer will be extended to auxiliary technology users; however, Microsoft has not implemented any way to certify eligibility for this offer, which some booths promote as a loophole to fraudulently obtain a free Windows 10 upgrade. Microsoft said that the gap was not intended to be used in this way. In November 2017, Microsoft declared that the program will expire on December 31, 2017.
License
During the upgrade, the Windows license 10 is not tied directly to the product key. Instead, the license status of the current Windows installation of the system is migrated, and "Digital licenses" (also known as "Rights digital" in 1511 or earlier versions) are generated during the activation process, which is tied to hardware information collected during the process. If Windows 10 is reinstalled cleanly and no significant hardware changes since installation (such as motherboard changes), the online activation process will automatically recognize the digital rights of the system if no product key is entered. during installation. However, the unique product key is still distributed in the retail copy of Windows Ã, 10. As with previous unlicensed versions of Windows, significant hardware changes will void digital rights, and require Windows to be re-enabled.
Update and support
Unlike previous versions of Windows, Windows Update does not permit selective installation of updates, and all updates (including patches, feature updates, and driver software) are downloaded and installed automatically. Users can only choose whether their system will reboot automatically to install updates when the system is inactive, or be told to schedule a reboot. If the wireless network is set as "Measured" - a function that automatically reduces background network operating system activity to save internet usage limits, most updates are not downloaded until the device is connected to a non-metered network. Redstone 2 allows the wired (Ethernet) network to be set as a meter, but Windows may still download certain updates when connected to the meter network. Updates may cause compatibility or other issues; Microsoft's troubleshooter program allows bad updates to be uninstalled.
Windows Update can also use peer to peer system to distribute updates; by default, user bandwidth is used to distribute previously downloaded updates to other users, in combination with Microsoft servers. Users can choose to only use peer-to-peer updates in their local area network.
The original Windows RTM Release 10 ("Windows 10, released in July 2015") received mainstream support for five years after its original release, followed by five years of extended support, but this depends on condition. Microsoft's lifecycle support policy for the operating system notes that "Cumulative update, with each update built on all previous updates", that "the device needs to install the latest updates to stay supported", and that the device's ability to receive future updates will depending on hardware compatibility, driver availability, and whether the device is in an OEM "support period"? -? a new aspect that is not taken into account in the lifecycle policy for previous versions. This policy was first implemented in 2017 to block Intel Clover Trail devices from receiving Creative Updates, as Microsoft confirmed that future updates "require additional hardware support to provide the best possible experience", and that Intel no longer provides support or drivers for the platform. Microsoft states that this device will no longer receive feature updates, but will still receive security updates until January 2023.
Feature updates
Windows 10 is often described by Microsoft as a "service", as it receives regular features updates containing new features and other changes. In April 2017, Microsoft stated that in the future, this update will be released twice a year every March and September.
The speed of feature updates received by the device depends on which release channel is used. The default branch for all Windows users 10 Home and Pro is "Semi-Annual Channel (Targeted)" (formerly "Current Branch", or "CB"), which received the building stable after it was released publicly by Microsoft. Each build of Windows 10 is supported for 18 months after its original release. In a corporate environment, Microsoft officially intends that this branch is used for the deployment of newly released "targeted" stable version, so they can be evaluated and tested on a limited number of devices before wider deployment. After a stable build is certified by Microsoft and its partners as suitable for widespread deployment, the build is then released on "Semi-Annual Channels" (formerly "Current Branch for Business", or "CBB"), supported by Pro and Enterprise Windows edition 10. Semi-Yearly Channels receive steady development in a four-month delay since it was released on Target channels, Administrators can also use "Windows Business Update System, as well as existing tools WSUS and System Center Configuration Manager, to organize the deployment of structured update features across their networks.
The Windows Insider branch accepts unstable builds when released; this is divided into two channels, "Fast" (which receives new versions immediately after release), and "Slow" (which releases slightly delayed from their "Fast" release).
The company license may use the Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB edition, where "LTSB" stands for "long-term service branch". The LTSB milestone of Windows 10 is designed for long-term deployment in special environments (such as automated teller machines and medical equipment), and only receive quality life updates (ie security patches). Every milestone of LTSB is given a full support life cycle for 10 years. Due to use cases intended to build LTSBs, certain features, including most functional Cortana, Microsoft Store, and application packages, are excluded from LTSB. Microsoft Director Stella Chernyak explained that "we have businesses that may have mission-critical environments where we respect the facts they want to test and stabilize the environment for a long time." Two LTSB builds have been released, related to 1507 and 1607 versions of Windows 10; Microsoft said in 2017 that the next LTSB development will be released in 2019.
In July 2017, Microsoft announced a change of terminology for Windows branches, as part of an effort to unify the rhythm of updates with Office 365 ProPlus and Windows Server 2016. The branch system now determines two-step improvement improvement in the enterprise environment, "targeted" initial deployment of the new version on the system selected immediately after a stable release for final testing, and widespread "deployment" afterwards. Therefore, the "Current Branch" is now known as the "Annual Channel (Targeted)", and the "Current Branch for Business" for widespread distribution now referred to as the "Semi Annual Channel".
Version 1511 (November Update)
The second stable version of Windows 10 is called version 1511 . The build number is 10586. The code name " Threshold 2 " ( TH2 ) during development. This version is installed by November Update , which began to be distributed through Windows Update on November 12, 2015. It contains various improvements to the operating system, its user interface, packaged services, as well as the introduction of Skype-based universal messaging apps, and Windows features Store for Business and Windows Update for Business.
On November 21, 2015, the November Update was withdrawn from public distribution. This upgrade was re-created on November 24, 2015, with Microsoft stating that the deletion was caused by a bug that caused privacy and the data collection settings reset to default when installing updates.
Version 1607 (Anniversary Updates)
The third stable building of Windows 10 is called version 1607 . It was codenamed " Redstone 1 " ( RS1 ) during development. This version is installed by Birthday Updates , released on August 2, 2016, a little over a year after Windows's first stable release 10. Codename "Redstone" was originally thought to have been set aside for two feature updates. Although both will initially be released in 2016, the second is moved to 2017 so it will be released along with a wave of Microsoft's first-party devices that year.
The Anniversary Update introduces new features such as the Windows Ink platform, which facilitates the ability to add stylus input support to Universal Windows Platform apps and provides new "Ink Work" areas with links to pen-oriented apps and features, enhancements for proactive Cortana functionality, dark theme user interface mode, a new version of Skype designed to work with Windows Universal Platform, Universal Windows Platform enhancements intended for video games, and offline scanning using Windows Defender. Redstone also supports the Windows Subsystem for Linux, a new component that provides an environment for running Linux-compatible binary software in an Ubuntu-based user mode environment.
On a new installation of Windows 10 on a system with secure boot enabled, all kernel mode drivers issued after July 29, 2015, must be digitally signed with the Extended Validation Certificate issued by Microsoft.
This version is the basis for "LTSB 2016", the first upgrade to LTSB since the release of Windows 10. The first LTSB release, based on RTM (version 1507), has subsided named "LTSB 2015".
Version 1703 (Creator Update)
The fourth stable building of Windows 10 is called version 1703 . It was codenamed " Redstone 2 " ( RS2 ) during development. This version is installed by the Creator Update , which Microsoft announced on October 26, 2016. Version 1703 was released on April 11, 2017 for general availability, and on April 5, 2017 for manual installation via Windows 10 Upgrades and Tools Tool Media Creation. This update primarily focuses on content creation, productivity, and game features - with a special focus on virtual and augmented reality (including HoloLens and virtual reality headsets) and helping the generation of three-dimensional content.
It supports a new virtual reality workspace designed for use with headsets; Microsoft announced that some OEMs are planning to release VR headsets designed for use with Creator Update. Controls for Xbox Game Games and Game DVR features have moved to the Settings app, while the new "Game Mode" option allows resources to be prioritized over the game. Integration with Microsoft acquisition Mixer (formerly Beam) added for live streaming. The theme manager moves to the Settings app, and custom accent colors are now possible. The new Paint 3D application allows users to produce artwork using 3D models; this app is designed to make 3D creations more accessible to mainstream users.
The Windows 10 privacy settings have a more detailed explanation of the data that the operating system may collect. In addition, the "increase" rate of the telemetry collection has been removed. Windows Update Notifications can now be "snoozed" for a certain period of time, "active hours" where Windows will not attempt to install updates can now extend to 18 hours, and updates can be paused up to seven days. Windows Defender has been replaced by the universal Windows Defender Security Center application. Devices can be optionally configured to prevent the use of software from outside the Microsoft Store, or warn before installing an app from outside the Microsoft Store. "Dynamic Keys" allows the device to lock automatically when it is outside the range of a specified Bluetooth device, such as a smartphone. The "Night Light" feature is added, allowing users to change the color temperature of the screen to the red part of the spectrum at any given time of the day (similar to third-party software f.lux).
Version 1709 (Autumn Creator Update)
The fifth stable Windows 10 is called version 1709 . It was codenamed " Redstone 3 " ( RS3 ) during development. This version is installed by the Fall Creators Update , released on October 17, 2017. Version 1709 introduces a new feature known as "My People", where shortcuts to "important" contacts can be displayed on the taskbar. Notices involving these contacts appear above their respective images, and users can communicate with contacts via Skype, email, or text messages (integrating with Android and Windows 10 Mobile devices). Support for additional services, including Xbox, Skype for Business, and third-party integration, should be added in the future. Files can also be dragged directly to a contact picture to share them. My Person was originally announced for the Creator Update, but was finally held for the next release, and made his first public appearance at Build 16184 at the end of April 2017. The new "File-on-Demand" feature for OneDrive serves as a partial replacement for the "placeholder function "before.
It also introduces a new security feature known as "controlled folder access", which can restrict applications that are allowed to access specific folders. This feature is designed primarily to protect against ransomware that encrypts files.
Version 1803 (Update April 2018)
The sixth stable building of Windows 10 is called version 1803 . It was codenamed " Redstone 4 " ( RS4 ) during development. This version was installed in Updated April 2018 , released as a manual download on April 30, 2018, with a broad launch on May 8, 2018. This update was originally intended to be released on April 10 but was delayed due to a bug that could "improve possible Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) ".
One of the most highlighted features of this update is the "Timeline" feature that allows users to view their past activity history on their PC in the past and continue where they left off. It works in most Microsoft Store apps and selects the transferred apps, which are WinRAR and older versions of Microsoft Office.
Features under development
In May 2017, Microsoft launched the Fluent Design System (formerly code-named "Project Neon"), a reshuffle of Microsoft Design Language 2 that will include guidelines for design and interaction used in software designed for all devices and Windows platform 10. The design language will only include the use of movement, depth, and a more prominent see-through effect. Microsoft states that the application of this design language will be done from time to time, and it has already begun implementing those elements in the Automator Generation Creator Update and Automatic Updates Update.
In Build 2017, Microsoft announced some key features to be launched in Fall Creators Update; "Timeline" and "Resume from where you left off" will allow users to view recently-used list of apps and files sourced from multiple devices in the on-screen timeline, and sync content opened in the app (such as Office documents) so users can continue to work on different devices (similar to "Handoff" macos). These functions are enabled through the Microsoft Graph platform, and will support Android and iOS devices. Microsoft also plans to add "Cloud clipboard" synchronized between devices. Timeline has been delayed for the next release.
In November 2017, Microsoft detailed a new UI feature known as "Sets", which initially allows supported UWP programs to host in the Microsoft Edge tab. Microsoft states that this feature is designed to "organize and continue multi-faceted tasks", and will ultimately extend to non-UWP software.
On December 7, 2016, Microsoft announced that as part of its partnership with Qualcomm, its plan was to introduce support for running Win32 software on ARM architecture with a 32-bit x86 processor emulator, by 2017. Terry Myerson stated that this move would enable the production of devices Windows-based Qualcomm Snapdragon with cellular connectivity and increased power efficiency compared to Intel-compatible devices, and still able to run most existing Windows software (unlike previous Windows RTs, limited to Windows Store apps). Microsoft initially targeted this project toward the laptop. Microsoft launched Always Connected PCs in December 2017 to market Windows 10 devices with cellular connectivity, which includes two ARM 2-in-1 laptops from Asus and HP featuring the 835-on-chip Snapdragon system , and partnership announcements between AMD and Qualcomm to integrate Snaptagon X16 gigabit LTE modem with AMD Ryzen Mobile platform.
System requirements
The basic hardware requirements for installing Windows 10 are the same as for Windows 8.1 and Windows 8, and only slightly higher than Windows 7. 64-bit versions require a CPU that supports certain instructions. Devices with low storage capacity must provide a USB flash drive or SD card with enough storage for temporary files during upgrade.
Some pre-built devices can be described as "certified" by Microsoft. The certified tablet must include Power , Source of the article : Wikipedia
