Manufacturing began in the winter of 2007, in Volkswagen 2001 to 2009 subsidiary Auto 5000 (an experimental company within the company) in Wolfsburg and resumed subsequently under the standard contractual agreement of the company, in Wolfsburg and in Kaluga, Russia.

In 2011, more than 700,000 Tiguan have been sold worldwide since September 2007, with the biggest sales in Europe, Russia, the United States, China, Brazil, and Australia. Euro NCAP gives Tiguan a five star security rating.

China

The Tiguan import version appeared in the Chinese market in 2009, with a locally built version (aka Shanghai-Volkswagen Tiguan) debuting at the 2009 Guangzhou Motor Show. The Chinese built Tiguan uses 1.8 TSI (118 kW) and 2.0 TSI (147 kW), and has a revised front fascia. At the same time, Tiguan imports are still sold in China, which has 2.0 TSI and R-Line kits in the spotlight.

The basic design of the import model is the same as the international one. In order to distinguish locally and imported models, the Shanghai-VW Tiguan is named after China, known as ?? (tiguan), and the import keeps the name of the original letter. On July 17, 2009, Shanghai Volkswagen general manager and head of corporate public relations and two other corporate executives, died at the company's Volkswagen Tiguan in a high-speed traffic accident.

According to Chinese media reports, Shanghai VW General Manager Liu Jian and PR chief Zeng Jialin, along with two other executives, traveled at a speed of 220 km/h (140 mph) - far exceeding the maximum speed of 110 km/h (68 mph)) - when Tiguan crashed into a truck. Because Tiguan has a top speed of 200 km/h and there is a toll station just 2 km away from the crash site, there is a dispute about what really happened.

HyMotion

In November 2007 Michelin Challenge Bibendum, in Shanghai, China, Volkswagen demonstrated the Tiguan HyMotion study supported by hydrogen fuel cells.

Fuel cells produce 80 kW (110 hp) output power and an electric motor has 100 kW (130 hp). These figures give Tiguan HyMotion a top speed of 150 km/h (93 mph) and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) in 14 seconds.

The lithium-ion battery has a payload capacity of 6.8 ampere-hours and is an additional energy storage system. The output power from the lithium ion battery is 22 kW. The battery recovers from braking energy or hydrogen fuel cells.
