Tetley is the UK beverage manufacturer, and the largest tea company in the UK and Canada, and the second largest in the United States by volume. Tetley's manufacturing and distribution business is spread across forty countries, and sells over sixty branded tea bags.
Since February 2000, it is a wholly owned subsidiary of Indian Tata Global Beverages (formerly Tata Teh), the world's second largest tea producer after Unilever.

History
In 1822, Joseph's brothers and Edward Tetley sold salt from a pack horse in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England. They started selling tea and very successful they founded "Joseph Tetley & amp; Co." tea merchants in 1837. Relocated to London in 1856, they founded as "Joseph Tetley & Company, Wholesale Tea Dealers".
In 1952, in the initial example of cross promotion, Petula Clark's single "Anytime Is Tea Time Now" was used to advertise Tetley on Radio Luxembourg. Tetley was the first company to sell tea in tea bags in England in 1953. In 1989, after an extensive consumer test that set the British preference, Tetley launched a round tea bag.
The Tetley Group was formed in July 1995, as a result of purchases in management, when a group of investors bought beverage businesses worldwide from Allied Domecq. The Tetley Group was purchased by Tata Group India in February 2000, for £ 271 million.
This is one of the largest acquisitions abroad by Indian companies at that time. Tata Group is one of the largest business conglomerates in India, comprising more than one hundred companies, including Tata Global Beverages . This acquisition has helped Tata's business ambition to hold a global tea company.
As India reduces import duties on tea, Tata Global Beverages has offset its declining domestic market share with profits in Europe and North America. In April 2014, Columbia Law School and The Guardian reported that some Tetley teas were harvested by workers who did not receive a minimum wage in India.
In a statement posted on its website, Tetley's parent company Tata Global Beverages announced that it has "appointed legal counsel to verify compliance with independent review." The legal counsel will also appoint and assign Solidaridad an independent third party to make an assessment into life and working conditions of workers in APPL plantations (Amalgamated Plantations Private Limited [sic]). "
The company has claimed that APPL is not used in Tetley tea internationally, and that it only provides one small delivery of Assam tea for use in Tetley in India in the last three years. In October 2014, UNICEF announced that they are working with a tea company and with Ethical Tea Partnership (ETP) to handle child exploitation in the Indian tea community. This three-year program is funded by a number of advocacy groups, Tata Global Beverages and Tesco.
