Establishment

The idea of forming an organization for industrial real estate brokers began in 1939. Although the growth of the real estate industry continues, its specialists have little representation in the National Association of Real Estate Boards (NAREB), the predecessor of the National Association of Realtors (NAR). With this in mind and anticipating an increasing need for industrial space due to the outbreak of World War II, industrial selling agencies Frank G. Binswanger and David T. Houston, Sr. make efforts to organize and coordinate industrial sales agents throughout the United States and Canada. They were able to get sponsorship for the founding of the Society of Industrial Realtors (SIRs), and in the fall of 1940 at the NAREB national convention in Philadelphia, and the establishment of a national body of industry players approved. One year and two months later, the United States entered World War II.

SIOR plays a role in discovering existing plant space, and immediately available, which can be utilized for defense production, and then, war materials. More than 200 brokers from across the United States and Canada surveyed appropriate facilities and reported their findings to the War Department (now Department of Defense).
