ESPN Monday Night Football (abbreviated as MNF and also known as ESPN Monday Night Football on ABC for special rare special broadcasts) is the weekly live broadcast of the weekly National Football League (NFL) game on ESPN in the United States. From 1970 to 2005, the broadcast was broadcast on ABC's broadcast network. Monday Night Football is, along with the Hallmark Hall of Fame and the Walt Disney anthology television series, one of the longest prime time programs ever on commercial network television, and one of the highest ranking , especially among male viewers. MNF is preceded in the air by Monday Night Countdown served by Applebee's.

Monday Night Football is also broadcast in Canada on TSN and RDS, and in most of Europe. On September 7, 2013, the NFL announced that Eurosport United Kingdom will show Monday Night Football matches in the UK for the 2013 and 2014 seasons. Views are also seen in most of Australia on ESPN Australia, in Portugal on SportTV 3 and SportTV HD and on TV 2 Sport in Denmark, and in some other regions of the world outside the US at ESPN International. Spanish versions are aired on ESPN Deportes in the US and in ESPN International in Latin America, while the Portuguese version airs on ESPN Brazil. In accordance with NFL broadcasting policies intended to enable those who are not subscribed to cable or satellite television to view games broadcast by pay-TV networks, games are also available on over-the-air television stations in each participating local market.

On September 8, 2011, the first day of the regular 2011 season, ESPN extended its contract to Monday Night Football for eight additional seasons, granting it rights to broadcasts until 2021. The new deal, priced between $ 14.2 billion and $ 15.2 billion, also gave ESPN the right to expand the spotlight, international rights and streaming, and possibly a wild-card playoff game. Cable providers condemn the new contract, noting that ESPN has the highest retribution retribution fees from national cable television channels, almost seven times higher than its closest competitor (TNT), and raising costs every year.

Ikhtisar

After 45 seasons, there are now a total of 730 games broadcasted by the Monday Night Football franchise.

Scheduling problems

To avoid any uncertainty of scheduling, just before the first playoff game, the team may have five days off and the other six, there is no Monday night game during the last week of the regular season. From 2003 to 2005, one game is played on Thursday and the other Monday under the banner of Monday Night Football. Starting in 2006, when the series moved to the cable, two games were played at the opening Monday night to capitalize on fan interest during the "NFL Kickoff Weekend".

Monday night matches at the start of the season are often highly anticipated because of new records, teams usually showcase new talent and potential, and the storyline that comes into season is often played out as fans try to see if the hyped team is already formed. Since nobody knows during the first month of the season if the team is good, or will recover from a difficult start, interest is usually high during the first few weeks of MNF season.

Since the MNF schedule is set in April and can not be changed, the league and the network can not guarantee the season-end match will be significant or highly anticipated. Teams that are considered good during off-season can get out of a playoff dispute in mid-season; a prime example occurred in 1999, when San Francisco 49ers and Atlanta Falcons both entered the final game of the season MNF with a 4-11 note. It looked like a good pre-season game since Falcons played in the Super Bowl the previous season and the 49ers who went into the 1999 season had posted 16 seasons of 10 successive wins. It is also possible for teams like Rams St. Louis 1999 was not scheduled for Monday night matches because of his gloomy record in the previous year, and many other NFL teams (such as the 2004 San Diego Chargers, with zero primetime matches) have undergone major unexpected changes that led to a lack of attention MNF (these teams generally receive some point MNF years after their breakout success, which is great for viewers if the team continues to play well, and not so great if they go back to the ordinary alone or worse). However, the ability to predict NFL scheduling officials has shown remarkable abilities. Many MNF games that occur later in the season feature at least one team leading up to the playoffs or have to win the game's MNF to get a playoff spot.

The problem of having a national spotlight game which during the most critical weeks of the season at the end of the year probably will not show the most important game of the week has long been recognized by the league and network. As a result of this, the NFL wants to move the "Game of the Week" idea into Sunday night to make flexible scheduling possible. This is a step that will ultimately mean the end of Monday Night Football on ABC (the cable game is protected from flexible NFL scheduling rules adopted for the 2006-07 season; new rules apply only to CBS, Fox and night games NBC Week). The league currently has no interest in expanding flexible scheduling to include Monday Night Football, citing the logistical problem of games that move back and forth between Sunday and Monday.

Franchise with most appearances

The franchise with the most Monday night appearance is the Miami Dolphins. San Francisco 49ers won their Monday night record of 48th Worlds with a 28-0 win over the Los Angeles Rams on 12 September 2016.

The most common pair of Monday Night Football is Broncos vs. Raiders (17 match-ups in 2013) and Cowboys vs. Redskins (met for the 17th in 2015).

The now-defunct Candlestick Park in San Francisco holds the record for hosting Monday Night Football soccer games, including Monday night's 36th and final game on December 23, 2013. Among the stadiums that are actively drawn to conclusions from the 2013 season, Miami Gardens, Florida's Hard Rock Stadium has hosted most of the matches with 32.

As entertainment

Monday Night Football continues to provide as much entertainment as you can during the game. In addition to the extra cameras, the program has also pioneered technological broadcasting innovations, such as the use of enhanced slow motion replays and computerized graphics.

Celebrity guests - such as former Vice President Spiro Agnew, singer PlÃÆ'¡cido Domingo and former Beatle John Lennon, President Bill Clinton, and even Kermit the Frog - are often shown during the game to "turn on" the broadcast. The December 9, 1974 contest featured a rare example of two celebrities entering the booth, with Lennon interviewed by Howard Cosell and California Governor Ronald Reagan talking to Frank Gifford, with Reagan explaining the off-camera rule to Lennon as the game goes hand in hand. However, the late 1990s and early 2000s saw an increasing dependence on the entertainment factor. Some part-time shows, featuring popular music stars, were broadcasted entirely rather than ignored for game analytics by commentators, as in previous seasons.

In December 1980, one of the most memorable moments of MNF occurred when Cosell announced in the news that Lennon had been shot and killed in New York City. Monday Night Football is the first national broadcast to announce his death.

An advertisement during the break of the game of October 19, 2015 features the world premiere of the third footage of the 2015 movie Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

2000s

2006 summary

For 2006 debuted on ESPN, Williams, Jr. re-recorded the opening theme of MNF with an all-star clock band that included Brian Setzer, Little Richard, Questlove, Joe Perry, Clarence Clemons, Rick Nielsen, Bootsy Collins, Charlie Daniels and Steven Van Zandt. 2006 broadcasting generally begins with cinema films produced by Rico Labbe, Michael Sciallis and Jason Jobes. It was in one of these jokes that Barack Obama faked his announcement for the 2008 presidential nomination in favor of his Chicago Bears hometown in their match against St. Louis. Louis Rams.

That year, the temptation was followed by an open event produced by Los Angeles-based Los Angeles called "Transformation". It features computer-generated imagery showing a city being transformed into a football stadium and passers-by on the road transformed into players, coaches, fans and officials arranged into the updated orchestra's treatment of the theme song "Heavy Action". The sequence begins every week with different celebrities walking down the street, taking the shining football helmet with the ESPN logo on the side and saying, "I'm ready for some football! Are you?", So start the transformation process. Celebrities for 2006 include Arnold Schwarzenegger, Matthew Fox, Hugh Hefner, Paris Hilton, Spike Lee, Ashton Kutcher, Samuel L. Jackson, Ludacris, Jack Black, Kiefer Sutherland, James Belushi, Ben Stiller, Tyra Banks, Carmen Electra and Eva Longoria.

In addition, celebrities returned with full force to the booth, although this proved to be the first major critic of ESPN's MNF season. On the opening weekend, Arnold Schwarzenegger, another celebrity governor, was at a booth at McAfee Coliseum in Oakland, California; before that, Jamie Foxx appeared in FedExField in suburban Washington, DC Following them, celebrity performances include NBA basketball superstar Dwyane Wade, Charles Barkley Basketball Hall of Fame player, NASCAR Cup Series racer Jeff Gordon, comedian Jimmy Kimmel (whose words open for Joe Theismann is "how toe?"), actor Sylvester Stallone, film director Spike Lee, hip-hop artist Jay-Z, and MNF singer Hank Williams Jr.

2007 summary

ESPN drops back to just one tantalizing opener for the 2007 season. Williams Jr. and all-star bands back, only this time they play in "juke joint" on the country road. The vocalist arrived at the Yukon GMC truck (GMC paid for product placement) with the plate "BOCEPHUS", which is the nickname of Williams. The satire produced by the Syndicate computer was dropped and replaced by a short film previously recorded that focused on the team or player in the game. Some of them have featured actor Jamie Foxx.

Joe Theismann did not return to the MNF booth after 1 season, and was replaced by Ron Jaworski.

The guest visit continues: Barkley returns to the booth on September 17th in Philadelphia. Other guests throughout the season include Kimmel (the returning person), Drew Carey, Miley Cyrus, Russell Crowe and Terry Bradshaw. In addition, Gordon was a halftime guest in the match just before the Ford 400 that ended the season and joined team-mate Jimmie Johnson.

At the end of every game, Williams again said, "See you later in (the city which is the venue for next week's game)." Both the open and close contain the helmets of the participating teams, arranged in concert poster style.

2008 summary

Despite the emphasis on entertainment on overall television broadcasting, ESPN brought back Hank Williams, Jr. for his 20th season as part of the opening. This time, the opening order is set at the private residence. At the end of the song, Williams Jr. touching the foot pump, which supposedly contained the helmets of the participant teams that night. Helmets are launched from home to the stadium where the match is held. Through computer-generated imagery, the helmet "landed" in midfield during a live shot, and then exploded. Gimmick "bursting helmets" were also used at various times in the 1980s and 1990s during teasing pre-game. Williams Jr. then reappear at the end of the game to promote the fight next week.

ESPN also continues to promote the upcoming album through its use in bumper music. On September 29th (Baltimore Ravens at Pittsburgh Steelers), ESPN used "Another Way to Die", a duet between Alicia Keys and Jack White of the White Stripes - the song was part of the soundtrack for the 2008 Quantum of Solace , then the latest in the James Bond series.

Monday Night Football celebrated its 600th broadcast on October 20, 2008 in a match in which the New England Patriots defeated the Denver Broncos, 41-7.

The 39th season MNF ended on December 22, 2008, when the Bears defeated the Green Bay Packers, 20-17, at home at Soldier Field in Chicago.

2009 summary

The title sequence for season 40 Monday Night Football featured Hank Williams, Jr. seen on the steps of a building (maybe a museum), surrounded by dancers, football fans, and sculptures - who, along with everyone on the scene, start moving and dancing - patterned after them at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Transition to Williams Jr. is a book, with a chapter number (in Roman numerals, sequentially with each week) and a tag line about the game to be played that night.

At the end of the song, Williams Jr. installing a cable, thereby launching an animation helmet into space from the building to the stadium where the match was held (with the exception of October 5, 2009, when the helmet was enlarged) towards Brett Favre instead), past the International Space Station. Like the previous season (as mentioned above), the helmet "landed" in midfield during a direct shot and then crashed into each other. Williams Jr. appear again at the end of the broadcast to promote next week's game. After that, the picture was clarified and the picture enlarged into a book, which shows freezeframed images as part of a page. When this happens, the NFL end-game music bumper is played and the book closes, revealing the golden NFL logo on the back cover and signaling the end of "chapters", or games. The scene was filmed in the summer of 2009 at The Parthenon in Nashville, Tennessee.

Before Williams Jr. appeared, Frank Gifford gave a short sketch of the memorable moments in the history of Monday Night Football featuring one or both teams playing the game that night.

Tony Kornheiser did not return to the booth after 3 seasons and was replaced by former Oakland Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden.

The 40th season of Monday Night Football ended on December 28, 2009 with the game Minnesota Vikings-Chicago Bears in Chicago, where the Bear won in overtime, 36-30. The display ends with a sketch showing Gifford by looking back over the spotlight of the previous four decades - and the 40th season - from MNF , after which the book closes, signaling the end of the season. The 40th season has the highest seasonal show for MNF because ESPN gets the rights to the broadcast.

2010s

2010 summary

The opening for the 2010 season is identical to that used in 2009, except for the last scene. This time, Williams Jr. spinning paint-filled wheels, with CGI colors exploding into the air, showing helmets containing participating team logos - on the top of the building. In one other minor distinction, the chapter number in "book" is changed from Roman numerals to Arabic numerals. Gifford gave a new sketch and the Parthenon scene was repeated from the previous year. The 2010 season marked Williams '22 as part of an open broadcast.

In an unusual coincidence, both games that own the New York Jets as the home team at New Meadowlands Stadium (now the MetLife Stadium) were delayed due to heavy rain and lightning in the area. In the first example, the 13 September match against the Baltimore Ravens, it delayed 25 minutes; a second delay, before the Oct. 11 contest against the Minnesota Vikings, lasts for 40 minutes. Prior to the September 13th game, the last ESPN broadcast to face the weather problem was on October 4, 1998 (Sunday night) when lightning stopped the game between Seattle Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs during the second quarter. The first delay forced ESPN to use ESPN2 for the broadcast of the match, this time for Chiefs' home opener against the San Diego Chargers. As in 2007, the broadcast was diverted to ESPN after the first game ended.

The game between Jets and Vikings was Brett Favre's first game at East Rutherford since his only season there in 2008 and marked the return of Randy Moss to the Vikings. Moss only played four games for Minnesota until he was released on 2 November.

Summary 2011

The opening sequence for the 2011 season is set in a closed studio setting, with Hank Williams Jr. (in the 23rd year) performing with the band in front of the live audience with a large video screen in the background. The end of the opening sequence displays the team logo of the evening's participants who transitioned to the New Monday Night logo before going to live shot. On October 3, 2011, ESPN drew the theme song after Williams appeared on the Fox News Channel program, Fox & amp; Friends , where he compares golf outings involving Barack Obama, John Boehner, Joe Biden and John Kasich to "Hitler playing golf with Netanyahu." On October 6, 2011, it was announced that Williams no longer sings the theme song, and that "All My Rowdy Friends" is no longer used as a theme, since Williams still has the song. A statement from ESPN said that the network had "decided to part with Hank Williams Jr. We appreciate his contribution over the past few years. The success of Monday Night Football is always about the game and will continue." Williams commented on this issue: "After reading hundreds of e-mails, I've made a decision... By withdrawing my opening October 3rd, [ESPN] stepped on the first Freedom Speech Amendment fingers, so that's why I'm my song and < i> All My Rowdy Friends out of here It's very good. " MNF has no opening sequence at all from week 4 until the end of that season.

With Suzy Kolber transferred to a new studio event NFL32 , and Michele Tafoya after leaving ESPN for NBC Sunday Night Football, the position of a side reporter played between various reporters for this season.

For the second year in a row, and the third time overall, early at 10:15. The Eastern Time game (Oakland Raiders in Denver Broncos) is shown on ESPN2 as a game that starts at 7:00. Eastern Time (New England Patriots at Miami Dolphins) ran past the scheduled time period.

summary 2012

Lisa Salters was appointed as a permanent sideline reporter for the 2012 season. In addition, color commentator Ron Jaworski did not return to the booth after 5 seasons. As a result, Jon Gruden became the sole color commentator, with MNF going back to the two-person booth for the first time since his last season at ABC (2005). The opening graphical sequence of MNF, which shows the helmet logo of two participating NFL teams and then the program logo, is visible before the Monday Night Football Launch segment.

Summary 2013-14

The opening animated sequence begins with GMC Sierra 2014 (GMC paid for product placement) image and then goes into the timeline of historical events that occurred during the Monday Night Football era, including some highlights about MNF game from 43 previous seasons until 2012. At the end of the sequence, the helmet featuring the logos of the two participating teams that night was featured, followed by various Monday Night Football logos used since the program's debut in 1970. The opening animation sequence 80 seconds, which also featured Pac-Man, Darth Vader and President Ronald Reagan, created by actor/filmmaker Peter Berg.

Revised opening sequences are used for the 2014 season. Among some changes, GMC product placements are promoting a row of Denali vehicles, while their own sequence includes some additional highlights from the game's MNF from 44 previous seasons through 2013.

2015 summary

The 3D animated sequence is used for the 2015 season (the 46th overall and the tenth in ESPN). GMC product placement once again promotes the line of Denali car vehicles, including the Yukon Denali seen at the beginning. Also among the many changes are the highlights of the game's MNF - this time, they are organized inside a computer-generated stadium using 3D imagery - from the previous 45 seasons through 2014.

This is Mike Tirico's last season as a play-by-play broadcaster for MNF, as he will join NBC Sports in June 2016.

The new version, which looks before every kickoff of the game, is a collaboration of Williams, Jr., the country duo Florida Georgia Line, and R & B singer Jason Derulo.

The second game of the 1st week of the MNF doubleheader between Los Angeles Chargers and the Denver Broncos sees Beth Mowins being the first woman to be called the nationally broadcasted NFL game.

Sean McDonough left the MNF booth after 2 seasons to re-call college football games on the network, and will be replaced by Joe Tessitore. In addition, Booger McFarland, who has been a campus soccer analyst for the network since 2014, will join the MNF team as a field analyst. Lisa Salters remains a side reporter.

Music theme

Hank Williams Jr. reworking his country music "All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight" to be included in the broadcast introduction as "All My Rowdy Friends Are Here on Monday Night" (original prelude music is an organ-based piece called "Score", written by Charles Fox and recorded by Bob's Band). In addition, Edd Kalehoff modernized the classic "Heavy Action" theme in 1989.

For ABC's last MNF match in 2005, Williams Jr.'s rendition from "Turn Out the Lights, The Party's Over", closing the broadcast.

Digital graphics on screen

Prior to 1997, Monday Night Football had a limited graphics package. CGI-based intro started to be used in 1984, with graphics on screen still limited to basic text. In 1988, the entire graphics package was updated significantly to better suit the rest of ABC Sports presentations. That year, he introduced the intro "clashing helmet", with a graphic onscreen consisting of italic texts that are underlined in red. It was updated in 1994, the year the network hosted the Super Bowl XXIX, with a more box-like design. The permanent score bug will not be introduced until 1997.

1997-2005

Monday Night Football started using a score bug in 1997, the second network to do so after Fox introduced the first regular scoring bug on screen when it began showing NFL games in 1994. Before this, the package graphs were limited, but followed the scheme the basic color of "tomato and mustard sauce" is red and yellow. The first scorebug includes team names, scores, remaining time, and is shown in the quarter where the game is taking place. This design was used during the 1998 season.

ABC hosted the Super Bowl XXXIV for 1999, and updated its graphics package to be more like an ESPN cable network sister. ABC began using extended abbreviations for team names (eg, "TENN", "VIKES", "PACK", and "FINS" instead of "TEN", "MIN", "GB", and "MIA"), as four- and five-letter abbreviations are used on ESPN coverage. The result is a larger scorebug with a more conventional font. It was slightly modified in 2000 to have a border that better matches the red and yellow color schemes.

The chart for Monday Night Football was changed in the 2002 season, the year the network hosted the Super Bowl XXXVII. The scorebug is a solid color, with a more rounded shape, and a font that is compressed horizontally. ESPN graphs no longer resemble ABC charts (with ESPN using gray and black designs with rounded corners). In 2005, the last year of broadcasting on ABC, Monday Night Football began using a horizontal bar at the bottom of the screen rather than scorebug, with all the information contained on one line.

2006-present

After Monday Night Football moved to ESPN in 2006 (around the same time ABC Sports changed its name to ESPN on ABC), ESPN changed its entire graphics package into red and black designs, while NFL coverage using Design. For NFL aired in 2006 and 2007, a dark gray metallic scorebug was used, located on an unusual placement in the middle of the bottom of the screen.

For the 2008 season, a new graphical scheme was introduced that built around a new screen known as "dashboard"; the scoreboard, which is now a horizontal bar, is installed in a special area that extends at the bottom of the screen. All lower-third graphics are also displayed on the dashboard, replacing the scorebar when in use.

For the 2009 and 2010 seasons, a revamped version of the 2008 design was used, incorporating a new metallic silver design. The time-out indicator is added to the score bar in Week 4 of the 2009 season. For the 2009 season alone, the "40-year" logo was put into the bar to celebrate the 40th season of Monday Night Football . The "silver" graphic scheme will later be adopted by other ESPN properties, such as college football games in December 2009.

In the 2011 season, the banner was restructured as a black, metallic design, much larger than most scorebars - including the previous one (despite its size varying, becoming significantly wider, though thinner by 2012). For ESPN's first pre-season match of 2012, the time-out indicator is also accompanied by two smaller red lights to the right, indicating the number of remaining play challenges, but this unexpectedly erases the following games. On September 10, 2012, Monday Night Countdown started using the MNF graphics scheme.

For the 2015 season, the graphics are completely overhauled to match the motifs that have been used for NSPL studio programming ESPN since the previous year. However, studio programming uses a new motif for introductions and transitions only, while the insertion graph actually uses the standard ESPN package used for SportsCenter and all other sports. Meanwhile, MNF uses NFL motifs for all insert graphics, not just introductions and transitions. In particular, NFL motifs use horizontal score bars at the bottom of the screen, whereas standard graphics packages use a score box. The layout is standard, with teams in their background colors, with timeout indicators also displayed in team colors. Experimently, the bar scores "auto-hide" itself during play, even though it's permanently displayed for the last two minutes every half and, if necessary, overtime. This is also the first time ESPN has used a full 16: 9 frame for its NFL graphics.

Scheduling at local stations

From 1970 to 1997, coverage of ABC Monday Night Football started at 09:00. Eastern time, with game kickoff usually going on seven minutes over an hour. Coverage moved one hour earlier until 8:00 pm. Eastern Time in 1998, with a pre-game show titled Monday Night Blast , hosted by Chris Berman from the ESPN Zone restaurant in Baltimore before the start of the game at 8:20 pm. This is done primarily to overcome ABC's inability to find an appropriate 8:00 afternoon. lead-in program for MNF because MacGyver ended its operation in 1992 (even two other series from MacGyver ' s the production company Paramount Television - The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles and The Marshal - sees success, despite connections with Paramount's Indiana Jones film series), and allowing the station to start a local news broadcast end closer to their regular time. Bad ratings cause this experiment to be deleted after one season, with MNF once again moving to 9:00 pm. in 1999, albeit in many NFL markets, at 8:00 pm. The hours (East Time) from 1999 to 2006 were replaced by affiliates with locally produced and programmed sports and training events and events, with ABC programming at that time moving into late night or weekend slots; at the end of the ABC race, at 8:00 pm. Timeslot filled with both news magazines and short reality television programs that failed to make headway ratings because of affiliate pre-emptions.

From 1970 to 1995, Fisher Broadcasting's ABC affiliated companies in Seattle (KOMO-TV) and Portland (KATU) aired the MNF game on a one-hour tape delay starting at 7:00 am. Pacific Time (the game usually starts in the Pacific Time Zone at 6:00 AM, according to 9:00 Eastern) to accommodate local news broadcasts (except Seattle Seahawks is playing, in this case the game will be shown live). This exercise, opposed by viewers and ABC, ended in 1996. KOMO then tried to accommodate local news broadcasts earlier than its local station competitors by marketing it as KOMO 4 News PrimeTime , touting it as a way to watch news at a more convenient time than during the afternoon rush hour. In addition, this practice is done in Hawaii, where the Honolulu affiliate ABC KITV delayed the game until 06:00. Hawaii-Aleutian Time, corresponds to 11:00 pm or midnight east during summer time on the mainland. Thus, the game, which is broadcast live on local radio starting at 3:00 or 4:00, is almost over before it airs on television. In the case of Guam, KTGM, an ABC affiliate in the US territory, broadcast MNF directly on Tuesday at 11:00 am, because Guam is the day ahead of the United States because it is on the other side of the International Date Line.

The request to broadcast Monday Military Football instant games across the United States over ABC is difficult to reconcile with other prime time programming, which usually starts at a specific local time regardless of time zone. On the East Coast, with MNF starting at 9:00. East Time, there is one primetime clock to schedule regular programming. However, on the West Coast, the game runs from 6:00 to 9:30 pm. Pacific Time (or in the case of Seattle and Portland from 1970 to 1995, 7:00 to 10:30), leaving little or no time for additional network programming on Monday. As a result, a network program scheduled for prime time on the East Coast is broadcast at various hours on the West Coast. Most affiliates push network events to immediately after the game; however, the station owned and operated by Los Angeles, KABC-TV, delayed them until 10 pm. from at least the mid-1990s to 2005 to show trivia contests and other locally-produced sporting events (the longest running show was Monday Night Live, hosted by sporting event host Todd Donoho). Meanwhile, KOMO, one of the delayed recording stations MNF in many cases, broadcast a new episode of sitcom Trainers on Saturday afternoon (usually provided, incidentally, for broadcasting lessons football, many of the series take place on a fictional college campus). Except for Seattle and Portland from 1970 to 1995, ABC World News Tonight is routinely prioritized on most West Coast affiliates, although ABC's networking stations (eg Los Angeles) broadcast the program early in the afternoon.

Since ESPN took over coverage in 2006, the game usually has a kickoff time of 8:30 pm. East. However, when ESPN shows a doubleheader during the first week of the season, each game starts at 7:00 and 10:15 pm. East. There is a problem with local stations in the ESPN era, where the stations in each team's market that broadcast live ESPN are in many cases ABC affiliates, who have to Dance with the Stars to air the NFL. This forces affiliates to air the program immediately after the local late-night newscast, and has produced a telephone and internet voting coordinator in this program that keeps a late night voting window open for markets or markets where Dancing with the Stars has been removed before.

In some cases, the program is transferred to the ABC affiliate affiliate station for live viewing (for example, up to 2011 in Minneapolis-St. Paul market, when NBC's affiliate KARE takes over as a local broadcaster of the game MNF Minnesota Vikings is playing a game that is being broadcast on local affiliate ABC KSTP-TV, sister independent station KSTC-TV shows DWTS live). In 2016, for the opening night of the game Monday night (the second in doubleheader) between the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers, ABC's second market station (KABC-TV and KGO-TV) will broadcast World News Tonight > and DWTS in the Eastern Time Zone slot of their lives, so it airs at 3:30 and 5:00 PT respectively.

Additional NFL game rights

playoff game

When ABC first gained the right to air MNF in 1970, it did not include playoffs. The network was eventually allowed into the Super Bowl airing rotation, starting with the Super Bowl XIX in January 1985. As the league expanded the playoffs from 10 teams to the 12-team tournament in 1990, ABC was then given the right to air the first two Wild Card Playoff games.
