Graphics animation is a variation of stop motion (and may be more conceptually related to flat cel animation and paper image animation, but technically still qualifies as a stop motion) consisting of animated photos (in whole or in parts) and other non-drawing flat visual graphics, such as newspaper clippings and magazines.
In its simplest form, "animation" Graphics can take the form of animated cameras that simply shift up and down and/or across individual photos, one by one, (filmed frame by frame, and hence, "animation") without altering photos from frame to frame. But once the photographs (or "charts") are also moved from frame to frame, a more interesting motion montage can be produced, such as in the 1977 Los Angeles animator Mike Jittlov's 1971 animato. Graphical animations can (and often are) combined with other forms of animation including direct manipulation animation and traditional cel animation.
Examples include Frank Mouris' Frank Oscar-winning short film Frank Film , and Charles Braverman The Beatles Heavy Cream (1974), originally produced for late-night TV show Geraldo Rivera of his time , Goodbye America .
