Battleship is a 2012 American military science fiction action film loosely based on board games of the same name. The film was directed by Peter Berg and starring Taylor Kitsch, Rihanna, Tadanobu Asano, Alexander SkarsgÃƒÆ' Â¥ rd, and Liam Neeson. Filming takes place in Hawaii and in the USS Missouri . In the film, a fleet of vessels is forced to battle with a fleet of outer space to thwart their destructive purpose.

Battleship aired in Tokyo on April 3, 2012 and received a wide release by Universal Pictures on May 18th. It receives a mixed-to-negative review. The film also performed at the box office, generating only $ 65 million in North America against a gross total of $ 303 million worldwide.

Plot
In 2005, the Gliese system was found to have potentially habitable planets and an array of communications built by NASA to send transmissions from Hawaii. Meanwhile, Alex Hopper was arrested while trying to impress Sam Shane. His brother, Stone naval officer, forced Alex to join the US Navy in order to improve his life.
In 2012, Alex and Sam are in a relationship and Alex serves as a lieutenant on board the USS John Paul Jones while Stone reigns USSÃƒ, Sampson , but Alex is in danger of accepting disciplinary discharge. During the 2012 RIMPAC drill, five alien planes arrived. Their communications ships collided with satellites and crashes in Hong Kong while four other landmines in waters off Hawaii. Sampson , John Paul Jones , and JMSDF My? k? investigate and find floating structures. When touched by Alex, he produces a force field that wraps the Hawaiian Islands and separates the ships from the fleet. Three alien warships appeared and started a confrontation. In the next engagement both Sampson and My? K? was destroyed, resulting in Stone's death, while the commando crew of John Paul Jones was killed. Alex considers the command as a ranking officer. They recovered the survivors of My? K? , including Capt. Nagata. The structure of the alien launches a drone towards Hawaii, which attacks and causes severe damage.
On Oahu, Sam, a physical therapist, accompanied retired US Army Colonel and amputated Mick Canales double while climbing the mountain. After realizing the existence of aliens, they meet with Cal Zapata scientists who tell them aliens have taken over the arrangement of communication, and Mick decides that they plan to use it to rebuild communication with their home planet. On the John Paul Jones ship, naval personnel capture semi-conscious aliens. Alien forms a telepathic relationship with Alex, showing him that they have successfully invaded and conquered other planets. Other aliens arrive to take their companion, but are prevented from sabotaging the ship. Inspection of captured alien helmets reveals alien sensitive to sunlight. Ashore, Sam and Nick forced Zapata to recover his spectrum analyzer from aliens. They use it for John Paul Jones radio and tell them aliens will be able to reach their planet within four hours.
With radar disabled, Captain Nagata suggested using NOAA tsunami warning boats around Hawaii to track alien warships. This allowed John Paul Jones to destroy two of them but the third escaped their fire. At dawn, they lure the warship eastwards as Alex and Nagata shoot out the window of his bridge, blinding the crew and letting John Paul Jones destroy the foreign ship. The John Paul Jones then drowned by the alien drone as the escape crew.
The victims returned to Pearl Harbor and confiscated the USSÃƒ, Missouri , a disabled warship. With the help of retired veterans who preserve it, Missouri is returned to combat readiness and faces alien structure, revealed as a giant parent. In the ensuing battle, Missouri severely damages its excavation and disables the force field. Meanwhile, Sam, Mick, and Cal attempt to evict aliens in the communications room. As a ship parent, Alex uses their last shell to destroy the array of communications. Fighters from the RIMPAC fleet suddenly arrive and destroy the drones and their mothers, eliminating the threat of aliens.
The ceremony was held in honor of military personnel, in which Alex was promoted to lieutenant commander and served with Silver Star and Cross Navy of his deceased brother. After the ceremony, Alex asks the father of Sam Admiral Terrance Shane to marry him. The admiral initially refused, but then took Alex to lunch to discuss the matter, referring to how Alex and Sam met.
In the post-credit scene, three teenagers and a builder in Scotland find the pod of aliens falling. When they open it, the hands of the aliens reach out, and they run away in fear.

Production

Battleship is commencing filming in Gold Coast Australia in 2010, but the production company changed the location due to a lack of Australian government tax incentives and a high budget estimate of $ 209 million.

Filming took place in the United States on the Hawaiian island of Maui and Oahu, as well as in Sherman Oaks, California to perform some apartment scenes and in Playa del Rey, California where they filmed the scene of driving along with the shootout. Due to its success with the Transformers franchise, composer Steve Jablonsky was selected to print the official soundtrack. This soundtrack features original compositions from Jablonsky and features rock guitarist Tom Morello from Rage Against The Machine. Director Peter Berg stated:

Working with composers is often a very frustrating experience because you speak different languages â€‹â€‹and, often, they take two or three jobs, all at the same time. They are tough and pretentious and they torture artists. I will not name names, but most of them. One person not named Hans Zimmer, who taught Steve Jablonsky. We had several meetings and I got this idea. The day I met him, I already had an MRI for my neck, and they made a very scary sound. I'm like, 'I just did this MRI, and when I was there, I thought about aliens, and that's really scary.' And he's like, 'Oh, that's great!'
