History

Maya was originally a next-generation animation product based on code from The Advanced Visualizer by Wavefront Technologies, PowerAnimator by Alias Research, Inc., and Alias Sketch! . IRIX-based projects are combined and animated features added; The codename of the project is Maya. Walt Disney Feature Animation collaborated closely with Maya's development during the production of Dinosaur. Disney requests that the User interface of the app be customized so that personalized workflows can be created. This is a special influence in Maya architecture that is open, and partly responsible for it being very popular in the animation industry.

After Silicon Graphics Inc. acquired Alias and Wavefront Technologies, Inc., Wavefront's next-generation technology (later in development) coupled to Maya. The acquisition of SGI is a response to Microsoft Corporation acquired Softimage, Co. The new wholly owned company is called "Alias Wavefront".

In the early days of development, Maya started with Tcl as a scripting language, to capitalize on its resemblance to the Unix shell language. But after the merger with Wavefront, Sophia, the scripting language in Wavefront's Dynamation, was chosen as the basis of MEL (embedded Maya language).

Maya 1.0 was released in February 1998. After a series of acquisitions, Maya was purchased by Autodesk in 2005. Under the name of the new parent company, Maya was named Autodesk Maya. However, the name "Maya" continues to be the dominant name used for the product.

Awards

On March 1, 2003, Alias was honored by the Motion Picture and Motion Arts Academy with an Academy Award for Technical Achievement for scientific and technical achievements for their Maya software development.

In 2005, while working for Alias â € <â € < Wavefront, Jos Stam shared an Academy Award for Technical Achievement with Edwin Catmull and Tony DeRose for the discovery and application of the surface of their subdivisions.

On February 8, 2008, Duncan Brinsmead, Jos Stam, Julia Pakalns and Martin Werner received an Academy Award for Technical Achievement for the design and implementation of the Maya Liquid Effect system.

Industrial use

Maya has been widely used in the films of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and Wardrobe (2005), Silent Hill (2006), Surf's Up (2007), Transformer (2007), The Golden Compass (2007), Monster vs Aliens (2009), (2009), Alpha and Omega (2010), Salt (2010), Transformer: Dark of the Moon 2011), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011), the South Park TV series (2001-present) and Little Krishna (2009) ) and video games Stranglehold (2007) and Halo 4 (2012). This has also been used in the Rooster Teeth Animated web-series RWBY since 2016, despite several sets, characters, and series tools, made in Maya before Volume 4 was released.

Overview

Maya is an application used to generate 3D assets for use in movies, television, game development, and architecture. The software was originally released for the IRIX operating system. However, this support was discontinued in August 2006 after the release of version 6.5. Maya was available in "Complete" and "Unlimited" editions until August 2008, when it was converted into one suite.

The user specifies a virtual workspace ( scene ) to implement and edit media from a particular project. Scenes can be saved in various formats, default is .mb (Maya D). Maya exposes the graph node architecture. Node-based scene elements, each node has its own attributes and adjustments. As a result, the visual representation of a scene is based entirely on a network of connected nodes, depending on each other's information. For the convenience of viewing this network, there are dependencies and directed acyclic graphics.

Users who are students, teachers (or veterans or unemployed in the US market) can download a full educational version of the Autodesk Education community. Versions available in the community are only licensed for non-commercial use (once activated with product licenses) and some products create watermarks on the output renders. The software comes with a full 36 months license. After expiration, users can log into the community to request a new 36 month license and download the latest Autodesk product.

Components

Since the consolidation of two different packages, Maya and then contains all the features of the Unlimited suite that is now dead.

Liquid Effect
A realistic liquid simulator based on the simplified and non-compressed Navier-Stokes equation to simulate non-elastic fluid added in Maya 4.5. It is effective for smoke, fire, clouds and explosions, as well as many thick liquid effects such as water, magma or mud.
BifrÃÆ'¶st
BifrÃÆ'¶st is a framework of computational fluid dynamics based on simulated implicit fluid particles. It is available at Maya 2015 and later, after the acquisition of Naiad fluid simulation technology from Exotic Matter. BifrÃÆ'¶st allows liquid to be modeled realistically, including details such as foams, waves and droplets.
Classic Cloth
A set of dynamic cloth simulation tools utilizes work patterns based on planar patterns inspired by the process used to design real-world garment patterns. In modern production, Maya Cloth modules have been largely replaced by the faster and more flexible nCloth system introduced in version 8.5. Prior to this, third party plug-ins, especially Syflex, are generally preferred for their superior performance, simulation stability and polygon-based modeling workflows they are already familiar to 3D artists.
Feather
The fur simulation is designed for wide area coverage of short hair and materials such as hair. It can be used to simulate objects such as feathers, such as grass and carpets. Unlike Maya Hair, the Fur module does not try to prevent hair-to-hair collisions. Hair is also unable to react dynamically to the physical force on a per-hair basis. Effects such as Physics are achieved through adjacent feather effectors approaching the effects of physical forces that are averaged near the follicle.
nHair
Hair simulators are able to simulate dynamic forces that work on long hair and hair collisions. Often used to simulate complex human hair computing styles including pony tails, perms and braids. This simulation uses the NURBS curve as the base which is then used as a sweep for the Effects Cat brushes thus providing a rendering time curve such as a surface representation that can interact with light and shadow. Simulations on curves for other purposes, non-hair (such as flexible pipes, cables, ropes, etc.) are often known simply as Dynamic Curves.
Maya Live
A set of motion tracking tools for CG matching to clean platen records. It has been very outdated by MatchMover.
nCloth
Added in version 8.5, nCloth is the first implementation of Maya Nucleus, Autodesk's simulation framework. nCloth provides artists with detailed control of fabrics and material simulations. Compared to its predecessor Maya Cloth, nCloth is a faster, more flexible, and more powerful simulation framework.
nParticle
Added in the 2009 version, nParticle is an addition to the Maya Nucleus toolset. nParticle is for simulating a variety of complex 3D effects, including liquids, clouds, smoke, sprays, and dust. nParticles are more flexible than previous Maya particle systems in nParticles that can be used to simulate viscous liquids and support actual particle-to-particle collisions. nParticles also interacts with other Nucleus simulation frameworks without the need for expensive expensive work and scripting.
MatchMover
Added to Maya 2010, this allows a combination of CGI elements with motion data from video and movie sequences, a process known as matched displacement or camera tracking. This is an external program but shipped with Maya.
Composite
Added to Maya 2010, this was previously sold as Autodesk Toxik. This is an external program but shipped with Maya.
Camera Sequencer
Added in Autodesk Maya 2011, Camera Sequencer is used to eject multiple camera shots and manage them in one animated sequence.

Embedded Language of the Maya

In addition to its more recognizable visual workflow, Maya comes with a cross platform scripting language, called Embedded Maya Language. MEL is provided for scripting and a means to customize the core functionality of the software, as many of the tools and commands used are written in it. The code can be used to engineer modifications, plug-ins or injected into runtime. Beyond the use of this superficial language, user interactions are recorded in MEL, even allowing inexperienced users to implement subroutines. Scene information can be removed, .ma extension, editable outside of Maya in any text editor.

Supported operating systems

Autodesk Maya 2016 is supported on 64-bit Windows platform (Windows 7 (SP1) or later), macOS (OS X 10.9.5 or later), and Linux (RedHat Enterprise Linux 6.5 WS or CentOS 6.5). Support for Silicon Graphics IRIX was dropped after version 6.5 and openSUSE Linux support was dropped at Maya 2009.
