The Arc Trainer is a stationary, non-impact exercise machine, and is a registered trademark of Cybex International, Inc. The Arc Trainer is manufactured in Owatonna MN.
First introduced in 2003, the Arc Coach's footrest moves in the path of the arcuate movement as opposed to the ellipse pattern seen on the elliptical trainer. The motion arc pattern is a patented technology, designed to produce a force only when the user is in the load-load phase of the gait cycle. This produces strength in the legs that balance the loading between the hip and knee joints. The result of this balanced load design creates less pressure on the knee joint and allows for the effect of higher muscle exercises with lower exertion.
Like an elliptical trainer, Trainer Arc is regarded as an example of a form of weight training associated with the prevention of osteoporosis. This is comparable to a treadmill in its ability to induce cardiac muscle activity, but it reduces the impact of shocks typically associated with running a treadmill.
The Arc Trainer can be adjusted for slope and durability and has a variable step rate. Arrangement of resistance is proportional to body weight so that the same amount of relative work is performed by 110 pounds of women and 250 pounds of men when the same level of resistance is selected. There are two versions of the Trainer Arc, a lower body version and a total body version. Total Body Bow Trainers use the same forward pattern of motion in which the arms and legs on the same side move together. This motion pattern allows the user to transfer work to the upper body without simultaneously increasing the working level of the foot.
