Rave Cinemas , formerly known as "Rave Motion Pictures", is a cinema brand founded in 1999 and owned by Cinemark Theaters. Previously led by Thomas W. Stephenson, Jr., former CEO of the Hollywood Theater, and Rolando B. Rodriguez, former Vice President and Regional General Manager for Walmart in Illinois and northern Indiana. The chain was headquartered in Dallas, Texas until it was acquired by Cinemark Theater based in Plano.

Company history

Rave Cinemas, LLC was formed in late 2009 by TowerBrook Capital Partners and investors Lambert Media Group and Charles B Moss, Jr. Rave Cinemas then acquired four properties, corporate infrastructure, and leadership, and the Rave Motion Pictures brand from Boston Ventures has Rave Cinema, LLC (RRC). The PRC continues to have 21 other properties that will operate under the "Rave Motion Pictures" branding under a management service agreement with Rave Cinemas, LLC. Along with the PRC acquisition, Rave Cinemas, LLC, purchased business and real estate operations from 35 properties owned by National Amusements, Inc. (NAI), the parent company of Viacom and CBS Corporation. The former NAI assets were renamed "Rave Motions Pictures" in the second quarter of 2010.

In October 2012, Rave Review Cinemas, LLC, signed an agreement to sell 16 theaters with 251 screens to Carmike Cinemas for $ 19 million in cash and $ 100.4 million of lease obligations. Of the 16 theaters purchased, six in Alabama, four in Florida, two in Indiana, and one each in Illinois, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Texas. Prior to the sale of Rave owned or managed 62 cinema and 939 screens located in 21 countries across the country.

In November 2012, Cinemark signed an agreement to buy 32 Rave Cinemas locations for $ 240 million. Sales must get antitrust approval. Only two locations remain under the Rave Cinema umbrella after the Cinemark sale is complete, but there is much speculation in the industry that these two remaining locations will be sold or closed.

On November 27, 2012, the AMC Theater entered into an agreement to purchase four Rave Review Cinemas, cinema LLC not purchased by Carmike Cinemas, Cinemark, or Starplex. Of the four theaters were bought, two were in Louisiana, and one in Alabama and Florida.

On January 4, 2013, the AMC Theater entered into another agreement to purchase six Rave Cinema theaters which were not purchased by Carmike Cinemas, Cinemark or Starplex. Of the six theaters being acquired, two in Ohio, one in North Carolina, one in Nevada, one in Nebraska and one in California.

On May 10, 2013, Starplex Cinemas bought Berlin 12 located in Kensington, CT from Rave Cinemas.

On May 29th, 2013, sales of Rave Cinema to Cinemark Theaters finished. Cinemark was also asked to sell Rave Stonybrook 20 IMAX theater in Louisville, Kentucky, Rave Ritz Center 16 in southern New Jersey, and Rick Hickory Creek 16 in Hickory Creek, Texas or Cinemark 14 in Denton, Texas for the purchase of Rave Cinemas. In addition, Cinemark chairman Lee Roy Mitchell was also asked to sell Movie Tavern Inc. to the Southern Theaters. Some former Rave locations now have the Cinemark brand.

On July 18, 2013, Carmike Cinemas announced that it would buy Stonybrook 20 & amp; IMAX, Ritz Center 16 and Hickory Creek 16 cinemas from Rave Cinemas, a division of Cinemark. Cinemark stores Cinemark 14 in Denton, Texas. With this change, Hickory Creek will stick with Screenvision. Louisville KY and Voorhees NJ will move on to Screenvision from National CineMedia. Because Cinemark maintains the Denton location, stick with National CineMedia. The sale closes on August 16, 2013. On September 12, 2013, Southern Theaters announced that they obtained Movie Tavern from Lee Roy Mitchell after he was asked to sell Movie Tavern after Cinemark bought Rave Cinemas on May 29, 2013. As a result, Cinemark opened a dinner theater and their own movie entitled Movie Bistro. The concept was launched in August 2013 and is currently in four Cinemark locations in Colorado, Louisiana, and Texas. The Movie Tavern will remain a South Theater brand. As part of a long-term South Theater deal with National CineMedia, Movie Tavern will switch from Screenvision to National CineMedia in June 2014. In December 2016, AMC now has former Carmike movie theater, some of which are now branded AMC.

The company also has "Rave Digital Media" along with Continental Retail Development, with headquarters in Columbus, Ohio, and operates six properties under the "Rave Digital Media" brand. The Rave Digital Media brand was sold to AMC Theaters on January 4, 2013.

Facilities and features

Most cinemas have many concession sites, arcade games, online tickets and kiosks, and futuristic environments with special lighting, LCD menus and movie trailers, and some have stylish special event spaces.

Each auditorium in the built Rave has the following features:

  • DLP Cinema Projection
  • DTS digital surround sound
  • Seating stadium
  • The chair is tilted backwards
  • Luxurious luxury back seat
  • Arm holder/cup holder/tray table drawn
  • 18 inches up into each row (to promote a clear line of vision)
  • 48Ã, inches of excess space between each row (to add additional leg space)

In addition, large auditoriums often feature a two-storey exit with central seating for customers with physical disabilities and elevator access. Some cinemas are also equipped with Real D 3D cinema system. Each newly opened building is fully digitized in pictures and sound.

Property obtained from National Amusements may not have all of the features or designs listed above.

Rave and Christie Digital

In June 2006, Rave Motion Pictures announced a partnership with Christie/AIX to install 445 digital cinema systems in its cinema. Some Rave theaters (including the theaters in Peoria, Illinois, and Huntsville, Alabama) already have the Christie system installed; the full conversion of the existing theater was completed in August 2007. When Rave Cinemas acquired several theaters from the National Amusements in late 2009 and early 2010, they used Barco projectors instead of Christie. With Rave Cinemas now owned by Cinemark, the Christie projector will be removed and replaced with a Barco projector. At AMC Theaters, the Christie projector (Barco projector at Grove City 14) has been removed and replaced by Sony 4K Digital Cinema except for the largest screen. At Carmike in Hickory Creek, Texas, the Christie projector will be saved. At Carmike in Louisville, Kentucky and Voorhees, New Jersey, Barco projectors will be moved and replaced with Christie.
